Central Oklahoma Returns From Break, Wins by 60

Bronchos Beat Champion Christian College 107-46 Sunday In Edmond

EDMOND – Central Oklahoma returned from Thanksgiving Break with a huge 107-46 dismantling of Champion Christian College Sunday afternoon at Hamilton Field House.

UCO improved to 6-3 with the win, its second in a row, and now turns to MIAA play this week with three straight road games to open the conference slate.

"It was a good tuneup for us and it was a good chance for us to get everyone in the game," UCO head men's basketball coach Bob Hoffman said. "Everyone played and more than normal. That's going to be helpful in the future. We did what we needed to do and now we have to get ready for conference."

Central Oklahoma opens MIAA play at Pittsburg State on Thursday night and will play at Missouri Southern Saturday afternoon. The Bronchos also travel to Rogers State next week.

On Sunday afternoon at Hamilton, a crowd of a few hundred returned from Thanksgiving holiday to watch Matthew Willenborg put on a basketball clinic. The junior from Norman played just 23 minutes and put up career numbers. He tied a career high with 26 points and added 11 rebounds, five blocks, two assists and one steal. Willenborg was 11-for-16 overall, 2-for-2 from behind the 3-point line, and 2-for-3 at the free-throw line.

In a game that was only tied once, 2-2, Willenborg scored the next five to start a 17-2 run that spanned five minutes and set the tone for the day.

The Bronchos closed the first half on an 18-2 and led 54-20 at the break.

Josh Nwankwo scored 17 points to go with six rebounds, four assists, and one steal. Marcus Zeigler Jr. scored 12 points to go with seven boards, four assists, and four steals. And Ben Averitt had 10 points, three rebounds, one steal and one assist as four starters combined for 65 points.

Brady Hancuff led the reserve effort. The freshman from Edmond scored 11 points and had five boards, three assists and one steal. Noah Eckels, a freshman from Colorado Springs, scored eight points and had five boards. Connor Newton and Trey Tuck both scored six points, Carter Roman Nose had four, Chase Sucharda knocked down three, and Levi Kelly and Jayden Garces both scored two.

Central Oklahoma shot nearly 60 percent, going 46-for-77 (59.7) from the floor. The Bronchos were 7-for-15 from behind the 3-point line and 8-for-13 from the free-throw line.

UCO is not done with conference play. After the three-game MIAA road swing, the Bronchos will co-host the River City Holiday Classic in San Antonio, where Central plays No. 13 St. Mary's and No. 14 St. Edward's in a pair of non-conference neutral site contests. UCO will play its final non-con against Dallas Christian Dec. 30 in Edmond.
