Bronchos Pull Away Late From UNT Dallas

Central Oklahoma Gets Big Games From Josh Nwankwo, Matthew Willenborg

EDMOND – Josh Nwankwo scored 24 second-half points to lead UCO past a spirited UNT Dallas squad Monday night at Hamilton Field House.

Central Oklahoma (5-3) went to halftime tied 31-31 to the NAIA squad from the south but overpowered the Trailblazers from Dallas in the second half to pick up the win.

"They're a talented team and a well-coached team and I'm glad we got it together in the second half," UCO head men's coach Bob Hoffman said. "They fought us like crazy and there's no question they're going to win a lot of games."

Nwankwo did not score in the first half but put up 24 in the second half to lead the way. He had a game-high 14 rebounds to go with six assists and three steals. Matthew Willenborg scored 23 points to go with nine boards, two blocks and two steals, and one assist.

Central Oklahoma was 31 of 66 from the floor, a 47.0 percent rate, and just 3 of 18 from behind the arc. UCO went 16 of 20 from the free-throw line.

Ben Averitt scored 14 points and Parker Hannah added 10. Marcus Zeigler Jr. chipped in five points to go with six boards and six assists. Connor Newton scored three points and Trey Tuck added two points to round out the scoring.

UCO trailed 19-12 midway through the first half Monday night after a 9-0 run by the guest Trailblazers. Central spent the next nine minutes working back into the game and took a 31-29 lead on a Willenborg 3-pointer with one minute left in the opening half. UNT Dallas tied it 31-31 with 21 seconds remaining.

In the second half, a 6-0 run got the Bronchos started and that became a 10-2 advantage as UCO began imposing its will on UNT Dallas.

Dallas cut it to two points on three different occasions and eventually one point, 61-60, with 6:17 remaining before tying it back up 63-63 with 5:11 to play. But UCO went on another big run, 13-2, over the next four minutes to pull away.

Central Oklahoma will take a short break for Thanksgiving and returns Sunday, Nov. 30 against another NAIA squad, Champion Christian of Kansas, at Hamilton Field House.
