Bronchos Tripped In West Texas

Central Oklahoma Loses 81-70 At West Texas A&M

CANYON, Texas – Central Oklahoma fell short in a non-conference road game between two teams receiving votes in the NABC preseason coaches' poll with an 81-70 loss at West Texas A&M Saturday afternoon.

UCO led 36-34 at halftime, but the short-handed Bronchos couldn't keep pace in the second half and are now 4-3 on the season.

"We kind of ran out of gas today," UCO head men's basketball coach Bob Hoffman said. "I think we had a chance but we got ourselves in a tight spot against a good team on the road and that's a hard place to be."

Central Oklahoma's halftime lead disappeared in the first minute of the second half, then a 10-0 run by the host Buffaloes turned a one-point game into an 11-point deficit for the Bronchos.

UCO got it back to six points later in the second half, but it ballooned back to 16 points down the stretch before the 11-point loss.

Matthew Willenborg led UCO with 18 points and the junior had a game-high seven rebounds. Josh Nwankwo added 15 points, Marcus Zielger Jr. scored 14, and Jacobi Sebock had 12 points before exiting with an injury.

Parker Hannah scored one point and the Bronchos got just 10 points from their bench, with Ben Averitt and Brady Hancuff scoring four each and Connor Newton adding two.

Central Oklahoma shot 52.7 percent from the floor, making 29 of 55 total shots. The Bronchos were 4-for-12 from behind the 3-point line and 8 of 13 from the free-throw line.

UCO is back home for two more non-conference games and will play a pair of NAIA programs at Hamilton Field House next week. The Bronchos host UNT Dallas on Monday night and will welcome Champion Christian next Sunday afternoon. Central Oklahoma begins MIAA play in December with three straight road games at Pittsburg State, Missouri Southern, and Rogers State.
