UCO Advances To MIAA Championship

Bronchos Beat Emporia State 1-0 In Thursday's Semifinal

WICHITA, Kan. – Central Oklahoma beat Emporia State 1-0 Thursday afternoon to advance to the MIAA Women's Soccer Championship final for the second year in a row.

UCO improved to 10-5-5 on the season with the win, avenging a regular-season loss to Emporia September 28 in Edmond.

"We just keep fighting," UCO head women's soccer coach Amel Muhamedagic said. "We felt like we could get more in the first half with as many chances as we had, but we got enough. Our defense has been great all year and they were again today."

Avery Bass recorded her 11th shutout of the season in goal on Thursday. The UCO defense limited Emporia to eight total shots and the Hornets only put four on goal.

Central Oklahoma put up 12 total shots and also put four on goal. The play of the game came in the 60th minute.

UCO was awarded a free kick near the end line just outside of the box. First Team All-MIAA pick Rebekah George lined up to take the kick and sent in the cross right in front of the goal. Sophomore defender Kaitlyn Cotton was up for the set piece and she found the ball and headed in the score to give UCO the 1-0 lead.

Cotton nearly got a second goal when she hit the crossbar on a free kick from straightaway at 35 yards in the 83rd minute. Cotton took a team-high four shots. Caleah Carter took two shots.

Central Oklahoma will play Missouri Western in the championship final Saturday at 2 p.m.

The winner of Saturday's final receives the MIAA's automatic qualification to the NCAA Division II Women's Soccer Championship in the Central Regional.
