Bronchos Sweep Past Arkansas-Fort Smith

No. 7 UCO Rolls On the Road to Get Back on the Winning Track

FORT SMITH, Ark. -- Mikiah Perdue slammed down 13 kills to lead a balanced offensive attack that carried Central Oklahoma to a MIAA road romp over Arkansas-Fort Smith Wednesday night.

The No. 7-ranked Bronchos improved to 20-3 overall – reaching the 20-win mark for the fourth straight season – and 6-3 in the conference with the 25-20, 25-16, 25-12 drubbing. The two teams meet again Saturday at 1 p.m. at Hamilton Field House in Edmond.

"Any win on the road in our conference is a good one," head coach Edgar Miraku said. "We didn't play great but did enough to get the job done and that's what matters."

Perdue hit .400 or better for the seventh time this season, knocking down 13 kills in 27 tries with two errors for a .407 attack percentage while adding four blocks (two solo, two assisted).

Riley Roberts had another stellar all-around outing, hitting .350 with nine kills and two miscues in 20 attacks to go along with a match-high 20 digs, three blocks (one solo, two assisted), one ace and one assist.

The Bronchos also got eight kills from Sawyer Franz, five from Kedron Burk and three from Myla Unterweger. Lindsey Houran handed out 36 assists – her 11th straight match with at least 30 -- while adding 17 digs and two aces.

The two teams were locked in a 7-7 tie in the first set when a pair of UAFS errors, a Roberts kill and Parrott ace gave the Bronchos an 11-7 lead. It was close at 20-18, then Purdue sandwiched two kills around a Houran ace to make it 23-18 and Perdue's kill on set point gave UCO the 25-20 win.

Central dug its way out of an 8-2 deficit in the second set. The Lions were still up 14-10 when Purdue slammed down two kills and added a solo block in a 6-1 run that gave the Bronchos a 16-15 lead.

Fort Smith scored to tie it at 16-11, but it was all UCO after that as the Bronchos reeled off nine straight points to end it.

Unterweger's kill started the big run, Roberts followed with another and the teamed with Burk for a block before a Burk kill and Lion error gave UCO a 21-15 lead.

Roberts continued the closing onslaught with a solo rejection, came back with her fourth kill of the set and then Burk hammered down back-to-back kills to finish off the win.

Franz opened the third set with consecutive kills to put Central on top for good. The Lions were close at 7-5 when the Bronchos scored five straight to put it away, getting two kills from Perdue and an ace from Jordyn Baker in pushing the lead to 12-5.

UAFS got no closer than five the rest of the way, with Perdue knocking down two kills and adding two blocks down the stretch to put it away.
