Huck Leads UCO Past Lady Lions

No. 7-ranked Bronchos Sweep Arkansas-Fort Smith For Second Time in Four Days

EDMOND – Sydney Huck shined in her return to the court and No. 7-ranked Central Oklahoma strolled past Arkansas-Fort Smith Saturday afternoon at Hamilton Field House.

The Bronchos routed the Lady Lions for the second time in four days, winning 25-18, 25-10, 25-23 for their 18th sweep of the season. UCO improved to 21-3 overall and 7-3 in MIAA play.

Huck paved the way. The senior standout had missed the last three matches to injury and made an immediate impact, knocking down her first four attacks. Huck ended up hitting .412 with 16 kills against two errors in 34 tries for her 71st career double-digit kill outing.

"It was good to have Sydney back," head coach Edgar Miraku said. "She hadn't played in two weeks, but you couldn't tell it today. Our offense was very efficient and it was a good win for us."

The Bronchos made just nine errors in 123 attempts with 55 kills in hitting a stout .374, the second-best of the season.

Setter Lindsey Houran directed the high-octane offensive attack, finishing with 43 assists while adding five kills in seven tries and 11 digs. It was the seventh 40-plus assist match of the season for the senior star and 56th of her stellar career.

Mikiah Perdue had another robust performance, hitting .375 with 10 kills and just one miscue in 24 attacks while three other players had six-plus kills in limited action.

Sawyer Franz hit .412 with seven kills in 17 tries, Myla Unterweger hit .417 with six kills and one error in 12 attempts and Kedron Burk hit .385 with six kills and one error in 13 attacks to go along with four blocks.

Libero Kaitlyn Parrott contributed a match-high 15 digs and tied a season high with four service aces.

The opening set went back-and-forth early before UCO took the lead for good at 6-5 on Perdue's slam at the net and she added another kill to push the advantage to 10-6 in completing a 5-1 run.

It was still a four-point lead at 18-14 when a UAFS error, Burk kill and Parrott ace made it 21-14 and the Bronchos coasted in from there.

Central broke away from a 1-1 tie in the second set with a dominating 10-0 run highlighted by Parrott's serve. Huck had a shot down the line to make it 2-1, then Parrott had three aces as the Bronchos zipped in front 11-1.

The Lady Lions had no answer and UCO cruised in with the 15-point romp to take command of the match.

It was a different story in the third set, with the Bronchos having to battle from behind the entire way. UAFS led by as many as six and was up 15-10 when UCO started its comeback.

Unterweger knocked down three kills and Perdue added two in an 8-1 run that put the Bronchos on top 18-16 and it was a tight fight the rest of the way.

The teams were tied at 18, 19, 20, 21 and 22 before UCO went ahead for good on Houran's dump at the net. An attack error made it 24-22, then Fort Smith stayed alive on a Broncho miscue before Lari Migliorino's kill at the net ended it.

UCO goes on the road next weekend, traveling to Central Missouri on Oct. 31 and Missouri Southern the next day.
