Top-ranked Bronchos Tame Lions

UCO Improved to 17-0 With Sweep of Missouri Southern

EDMOND – Lindsey Houran moved up in the record books and unbeaten Central Oklahoma overcame a slow start to blow past Missouri Southern Thursday night at Hamilton Field House.

The Bronchos rallied from a 12-7 deficit in the opening set for a 25-20 win, then cruised to 25-14, 25-13 routs to finish it off in their first outing as the top-ranked team in NCAA Division II.

UCO improved to 17-0 overall and 3-0 in Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association play with its 15th sweep of the season. The Bronchos are back home Saturday, hosting Central Missouri at 1 p.m. on Alumni Day.

Houran handed out 33 assists in another stellar performance by the senior setter and team captain. She moved into third place on the school's all-time assists list with 4,465.

Hard-hitting Sydney Huck led UCO's balanced offensive attack, hitting .333 with 11 kills to go along with eight digs, two blocks and two service aces. Kedron Burk and Mikiah Perdue knocked down nine kills apiece, with Burk adding five blocks.

Kamryn Glover chipped in seven kills, with Lari Migliorino chipping in three in one set of action and Riley Roberts two. Kaitlyn Parrott paced the back row with 15 digs along with three aces, while Roberts had 11 digs.

"We came out a little tight and struggled to get our offense going, but finally settled down," head coach Edgar Miraku said. "It was a good crowd that was really into the match and we came out with a nice win."

The Bronchos made five attack errors in the early going of the first set and found themselves in a 12-7 hole when Miraku called timeout. That seemed to settle UCO down, which promptly went on a 10-1 run to turn the tide and take a 17-13 lead.

Huck had two kills and a block to key that surge and the Bronchos got kills from five different players the rest of the way to complete the comeback.

There was no such drama in the second set as back-to-back kills by Perdue and Huck along with a Glover ace staked UCO to a quick 3-0 lead. It was 5-1 after a Parrott ace and the Lions had no answer.

Huck smashed down six kills in 13 tries during the runaway rout, with Burk adding four kills in seven tries.

MSSU scored the first two points of the third set, but the Bronchos responded with six unanswered points to assume control. Migliorino's shot down the middle started that run, Huck followed with consecutive aces and then Burk slammed down three straight kills.

That made it 6-2 and the Lions never got any closer. Burk was perfect in leading the romp, finishing with six kills in six attempts.
