Bronchos Suffer First Loss

Top-ranked UCO Falls To Central Missouri In MIAA Clash

EDMOND – Mistake-prone Central Oklahoma suffered its first loss of the season Saturday afternoon, dropping a four-set Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association decision to Central Missouri.

The No. 1-ranked Bronchos won their 20th straight set 25-19 in the opener, but UCM came back with 25-16, 25-18, 25-20 victories to silence the Hamilton Field House crowd. UCO fell to 17-1 overall and 3-1 in the league, while the Jennies improved to 11-3 and 3-1.

"Central Missouri has a good team and they outplayed us today," head coach Edgar Miraku said. "We made too many mistakes, especially defensively. We just have to put it behind us and get ready for the next match because you can't have any letdowns in our conference."

The Bronchos committed 19 attack errors – third-most on the season – in hitting just .200 while making nine service errors and a season-high four blocking errors. UCO also allowed the Jennies to hit .291, by far the highest allowed this season by a defense that entered the contest ranking among the national leaders in opponent hitting percentage at .100.

Sydney Huck paced Central offensively with a season-high 18 kills to go along with 10 digs and four blocks (three assisted, one solo). Kedron Burk hit .333 with 11 kills and added five blocks (four assisted, one solo).

The Bronchos also got seven kills from Mikiah Perdue, four from Sawyer Franz and three apiece from Lari Migliorino and Kamryn Glover. Lindsey Houran had another solid outing at setter, handing out 43 assists to go with 13 digs, while Kaitlyn Parrott had 16 digs.

There were 12 ties and three lead changes in the first set as neither team could take control until the end, with Huck knocking down five kills in eight tries with no errors to lead UCO.

The Bronchos took the lead for good at 14-13 on a UCM service error, scored again on another miscue and made it 16-13 on a block by Burk and Huck. The Jennies were within 19-18 when UCO pulled away with a closing 6-1 surge.

Glover started that spurt with a kill and Riley Roberts followed with an ace before Central Missouri scored to make it 21-19. Huck then slammed down consecutive shots down the middle and Perdue's kill polished off the win.

The Bronchos opened the second set with a Huck kill, but UCM responded with four unanswered points to take a 4-1 lead and UCO never got any closer.

It was close throughout most of the third set and the Bronchos led 14-13 after Migliorino and Burk teamed up for a block, but Central Missouri ended the set with a 12-4 run to take the lead in the match.

UCO fought hard in the fourth set trying to extend the match and led 15-13 after Burk and Huck teamed up for a block. It was tied at 17-all before the ninth service error of the match gave the Jennies the lead and UCM went on to complete the upset.

The Bronchos are back home next weekend, hosting Northwest Missouri on Friday and Missouri Western on Saturday.
