Central Overpowers Missouri Southern

Bronchos Win 4-2 In MIAA Home Matchup

EDMOND – Central Oklahoma scored twice in each half and limited Missouri Southern's chances to earn a 4-2 MIAA win Sunday afternoon at Tom Thompson Field.

The Bronchos improved to 5-4-5 on the season with the victory and are now 3-2-3 in the MIAA.

"We made a great effort to get as many chances as possible and we finally got a few to go through," UCO head women's soccer coach Amel Muhamedagic said. "We didn't play very clean and our defense let up, but we did enough to get a win and that's what matters."

Jaci Decker and Jordan Tanges scored in the first half and UCO led 2-0 at the break. Lauren Piper and Evelyn Sydnes added second half goals to lift UCO to the 4-2 win. The Bronchos outshot Missouri Southern by a blistering pace, 25-11. UCO also held a 17-8 advantage in shots on goal.

The first half was all Central, with the Bronchos outshooting Southern 18-4. Decker opened the scoring in the 32nd minute on a break down the right side of the box. Caleah Carter put a ball through for Decker and she found the back of the net to make it 1-0. Tanges made it 2-0 right before halftime, scoring on a breakaway in the 44th minute.

Missouri Southern made it interesting with a 57th minute goal to cut the lead in half. It was the first goal allowed by senior keeper Avery Bass in 493 minutes of play.

The Bronchos quickly returned the match to a two-score game. A free kick was awarded at the top of the 18-yard box and Piper buried the shot to make it 3-1 in the 59th minute.

Southern again made the game interesting with its second goal in the 70th minute, but the Bronchos put it away with Sydnes' header in the 80th minute off a corner kick from Rebekah George that made it the final 4-2.

Bass played 68:16 in goal Sunday. She was taken out of the lineup for the first time this season and ended the match with three saves. Freshman Maddie Ortwein made her collegiate debut in the final 21:14. She allowed the second goal but also made three saves.

Central Oklahoma will return to the road next weekend, visiting Northeastern State on Friday night and Rogers State next Sunday afternoon. The Bronchos have just four regular season matches left. UCO hosts Pittsburg State on Halloween and will welcome Newman for the finale on Nov. 5 in Edmond.
