UCO Falls To Missouri Western

EDMOND – A promising start faded away as No. 4-ranked Central Oklahoma fell to MIAA rival Missouri Western Saturday afternoon at Hamilton Field House.

The Bronchos cruised to a 25-14 victory in the opening set only to see the Griffons claim 25-22, 25-23, 25-15 wins to take the match. UCO fell to 18-2 overall and 4-2 in the league with its second loss in three outings.

It was the fourth win of the season over a top-11 team for Missouri Western (12-5, 4-2), which was receiving votes in the last AVCA poll.

"We got off to a great start, but couldn't keep it up," head coach Edgar Miraku said. "Missouri Western is really good and they scored on a lot of long rallies, which seemed to take it out of us. We just have to put it behind us and move on."

Four players finished with double-digit kills for the Bronchos, led by Sydney Huck. The senior standout knocked down 15 kills – her seventh straight 10-plus kill outing – and moved into 10th place on UCO's career kills list with 1,312.

Freshman Myla Unterweger collected a season-best 11 kills, as did Kedron Burk, while Mikiah Perdue hit a match-high .400 with 10 kills. Lari Migliorino chipped in eight.

Lindsey Houran finished with a season-best 51 assists for the 30th 50-plus assist performance of her stellar career while adding 18 digs and two kills. Kaitlyn Parrott had a number of acrobatic saves on the back row in digging up a career-high 31 attacks, with Riley Roberts adding 14.

UCO got off to a great start in the match, jumping on top 5-1 in the first set behind two Morgan Manning service aces. The Bronchos led all the way and were up 11-8 before putting it away with a 6-1 spurt.

Huck had two kills and teamed with Perdue for a block and Jordyn Baker served up an ace to push the advantage to 17-9. Unterweger slammed down three kills the rest of the way as UCO cruised in to take the lead.

Missouri Western grabbed a quick 5-1 lead in the second set and led 19-12 before fending off the Bronchos down the stretch to take the 25-22 win that tied the match.

The momentum really shifted in the third set when UCO let a late four-point lead get away. Huck had five kills and Unterweger four in helping the Bronchos build a 21-17 lead, but the Griffons scored six unanswered points to move in front 23-21.

Perdue stopped that surge with a hard kill at the net, then MWSU answered with a point to make it 24-22. A Griffon error gave UCO hope, but the Griffons finished off the narrow win with a kill.

The Bronchos trailed just 9-8 in the fourth set after a Perdue kill, then MWSU reeled off five straight points to go up 14-8 and UCO never recovered.

Central hits the road next weekend, traveling for back-to-back matches at Fort Hays State and No. 3 Nebraska-Kearney.
