Central Oklahoma Turns Back Newman In Edmond

Bronchos Beat Jets 90-72 In MIAA Game

EDMOND – Central Oklahoma used a powerful 24-3 run in the second half as it blew past the Newman Jets 90-72 Saturday afternoon in an MIAA game at Hamilton Field House.
 
UCO improved to 8-5 on the season with the win – its fourth straight. The win also moved UCO to a 2-2 in the MIAA.
 
"The guys did a great job on defense tonight, and they did a great job of sharing the basketball," UCO head men's basketball coach Bob Hoffman said. "We did a good job getting everyone involved and we got stops when we needed to on the other end. It was a good day all around."
 
Central Oklahoma forced 20 turnovers for the fifth time in 13 games this season.
 
Israel Hart, who scored 13 points and dished out seven assists, led the way on defense with six steals. Jordan Thompson scored 12 points to go with a pair of assists, and he added three steals, giving the UCO starting backcourt nine for the game.
 
JV Seat led UCO with 23 points and seven rebounds. He was 5-for-12 overall with two 3-pointers and 11-for-12 at the free-throw line. Jacobi Sebock scored 21 points to go with six rebounds. He added three assists, one steal, and one block.
 
Mattew Willenborg also reached double figures with 12 points and he added a team-high nine rebounds and four blocked shots. The sophomore was 6-for-6 from the floor and also had two steals to help the defensive effort in addition to his four rejections.
 
Parker Hannah added four points with one 3-pointer. Jarreth Ingram chipped in three points to go with three rebounds. And Luke Haasl scored two points to go with four boards, one block, and one steal.
 
UCO led 36-33 at halftime. Seat hit all three free-throws after being fouled taking a shot from the top of the key to give the Bronchos the advantage with 43 seconds left until halftime.
 
Newman scored first in the second half, but then the run was on for the Bronchos.
 
UCO scored nine straight before Newman managed one free-throw, then the Bronchos scored eight in a row before the visitors scored on a layup. Then it was seven straight. A 24-3 run that last 6:06 in the second half, turning a one-point game into a blowout.
 
Central Oklahoma shot 52.9 percent in the second half, making 18 of 34 shots. UCO hit 5 of 12 threes and went 13-for-16 from the free-throw line as it outscored Newman 54-39 in the half.
 
The Bronchos were 31-for-68 overall on Saturday, a 45.6 percent rate. UCO went 7-for-20 (35.0 pct.) from behind the 3-point line, and 21-for-29 (72.4) from the free-throw line.
 
Central Oklahoma will play its next four games on the road in January before returning for two home games on the final weekend of the month. UCO plays at Northeastern State next Thursday and at Arkansas Fort Smith next Saturday. The Bronchos will visit Missouri Southern and Pittsburg State the following weekend before hosting Nebraska Kearney and Fort Hays State at the end of the month.
