Bronchos Stumble Against New League Member Fort Smith

Central Oklahoma Falls 79-71 At UAFS In MIAA Matchup

FORT SMITH, Ark. – Central Oklahoma's big second-half lead was erased in the final minutes and the Bronchos ended up on the wrong side of a 79-71 decision at Arkansas Fort Smith Sunday afternoon.

UCO, which was scheduled to play the newest MIAA member Saturday afternoon before winter weather caused a delay, is now 8-7 on the season overall and 2-4 in league play.

"Our offense just couldn't finish in the end and that cost us," UCO head men's basketball coach Bob Hoffman said. "Credit to Fort Smith, they got hot in the last five minutes, and we couldn't score. We need to work on some things to make sure that doesn't happen. It's too much to overcome and you can't put yourself in that situation."

Central Oklahoma led by 18 points, 51-33, five minutes into the second half of Sunday's contest. But the final five minutes of the half was the difference.

Fort Smith was still down 11 points, 69-58, when Parker Hannah made a free-throw with 5:10 remaining. The host Lions used a 9-0 run to whittle the lead down to two, 69-67. Matthew Willenborg hit a jump shot to give the Bronchos a 71-67 lead with 2:51 left in the game. UCO didn't score again.

Fort Smith ended the game on a 12-0 run, and with the 9-0 run right before Willenborg's jumper, outscored UCO 21-2 in the final five minutes of the game to get the win – its first against Central Oklahoma.

Jacobi Sebock led the Bronchos with 21 points on 9 of 14 shooting. He hit a pair of 3-pointers and made one free-throw. Sebock added six rebounds, three steals, two blocks and one assist.

JV Seat also scored in double figures with a dozen. He got 12 on 5 of 13 shootings and hit one 3-pointer and one free-throw. Seat added two steals and two rebounds.

Hannah scored 10 points off the bench. The sophomore guard had a team-high nine at halftime, but his free-throw with 5:10 remaining was his only point of the second half. Hannah was 4-for-10 from the floor, 1-for-7 from behind the arc, and 1-for-2 at the line.

Willenborg added nine points and nine rebounds. Jordan Thompson and Jarreth Ingram both scored six points, Israel Hart added five, and Ben Averitt chipped in two points.

UCO shot 44.8 percent from the floor on Sunday, hitting 30 of 67 total shots. The Bronchos connected on 5 of 21 3-pointers (23.8 percent), and 6 of 10 free-throws.

Fort Smith shot 45.8 percent overall, but made 10 3-pointers and went 15-for-20 at the free-throw line.

Central Oklahoma led for 29:41 of the game on Sunday, holding the advantage from the 11:17 mark in the first half, until the 1:43 mark in the second half. Fort Smith led for just 7:18, but still came away with the win.

UCO continues a four-game road swing next week with trips to Missouri Southern and Pittsburg State. The Bronchos visit Joplin, Missouri to take on MSSU Thursday night at 7:30 p.m. UCO will play first on Saturday at Pitt State at 1:30 p.m. as the MIAA Game of the Week on 38 The Spot.
