No. 23 Bronchos Overwhelm New Mexico Highlands

UCO Had .344 Team Attack Percentage In Moving To 3-0

SAN ANGELO, Texas – No. 23-ranked Central Oklahoma earned its first sweep of the young season Saturday afternoon, overwhelming New Mexico Highlands behind a balanced attack on the second day of the Kathleen Brasfield Invitational.

The Bronchos hit .344 as a team with 45 kills and just 13 errors in 93 attacks during a 25-8, 25-18, 25-19 victory in moving to 3-0. UCO wraps up the season-opening event against Fort Lewis at 4 p.m.

"Our offense was pretty efficient and we got contributions from a lot of different players," head coach Edgar Miraku said. "I was really happy with the way we played, especially coming off such a tough match last night. We came out ready to play and hopefully we can finish off the weekend the right way in our next match."

Central didn't finish first-day play Friday until nearly 11 p.m. in turning back host Angelo State in five tough sets, but the Bronchos were ready to go from the outset against the Cowgirls.

UCO never trailed in taking the first two sets and prevailed in a back-and-forth battle in the third to complete the sweep.

Addison Wimmer led the way with 11 kills and five digs. Sawyer Franz, Lari Migliorino and Mikaela Garvin had seven kills apiece, with Franz hitting a match-high .438 while Migliorino was at .357 and Garvin .333.

Setter Lindsey Houran guided UCO's high-octane attack, handing out 31 assists and adding four kills in four tries. Jenna Karp had three kills, three service aces and two blocks, with Katie Le's 14 digs pacing the defense.

Garvin and Franz had four kills each in the first-set rout, with the Bronchos using a 7-1 run to turn a 3-2 lead into a 10-3 cushion in seizing control early.

UCO jumped on top 6-0 in the second behind two Wimmer kills and two Karp aces. It was an 11-2 lead after back-to-back Wimmer kills before NMHU battled back to get close at 22-18.

Karp then followed a service error by the Cowgirls with a kill before teaming with Houran for a block to give the Bronchos the 25-18 win.

UCO fell behind early in the third set, but came back to take the lead for good at 10-9 on a Franz kill. It was a 17-16 lead when the Bronchos scored five straight points to put it away.

Franz started that spurt with a kill, then Migliorino followed with an ace. Brynn Egger and Mikiah Perdue had consecutive solo blocks before another Migliorino ace made it 22-16, with Perdue adding two kills down the stretch to finish it off.
