No. 15 Bronchos Topple SWOSU In Home Opener

UCO Sweeps Bulldogs To Stay Unbeaten

EDMOND – Jenna Karp and Mikaela Garvin combined for nine third-set kills to key a narrow win that completed unbeaten Central Oklahoma's sweep of Southwestern Oklahoma Thursday night at Hamilton Field House in the first match of the MIAA/GAC Crossover Challenge.

The No. 15-ranked Bronchos cruised to 25-11, 25-20 wins in the first two sets of their home opener before pulling out a tough 25-23 victory for their seventh sweep in a 10-0 start. Karp had five kills and Garvin four in the final set, with neither player making an error.

UCO returns to the court at 11 a.m. Friday to face Oklahoma Baptist, then takes on East Central at 4 p.m. before finishing the three-day event at 3 p.m. Saturday against Southeastern Oklahoma.

"I thought our crowd was really into the match, which really helped us," head coach Edgar Miraku said. "We got off to a great start in the first set and that momentum carried us. It was a solid win and a good way to start the weekend."

Karp continued her dominating ways to lead the Bronchos. The senior standout – who entered the day ranked sixth in NCAA Division II with a .497 attack percentage – hit .500 with 12 kills and just one error in 22 attacks to go along with four digs and an assisted block.

Sydney Huck also had double-digit kills with 11, while Addison Wimmer chipped in seven. Garvin and Mikiah Perdue contributed six kills apiece, with Perdue adding three blocks (one solo, two assisted).

Lindsey Houran had another fine outing distributing the ball in finishing with 38 assists along with six digs and two service aces. Defensive whiz Katie Le dug up 17 SWOSU attacks, including eight in the hard-fought third-set win.

UCO jumped all over the Bulldogs in the opening set, getting five kills from Huck in roaring to a quick 10-1 lead. It was 14-3 after a Perdue block and the Bronchos coasted in from there.

SWOSU led 6-5 in the second set before Central scored three straight points to move in front to stay and a 6-1 spurt allowed the Bronchos to turn a 13-10 lead into a 19-11 cushion. Perdue had two kills and two assisted blocks to key that surge and the Bulldogs couldn't catch up.

UCO looked ready to cruise in the third set to complete the sweep after going up 10-5 on a Garvin kill. The Bulldogs battled back and eventually pulled even at 13-all, setting the stage for a back-and-forth finish.

Consecutive kills by Perdue and Huck had the Bronchos on top 21-19, then it was tied again at 21. Karp's dart down the middle broke that deadlock and two SWOSU errors made it 24-21, but the Bulldogs stayed alive with two straight points.

Karp then capped the night with another hard-hit smash at the net that SWOSU couldn't handle and the sweep was complete.
