UCO Wins Again In Florida

Bronchos Beat Embry-Riddle In Flagler Saints Classic

ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. – No. 18 Central Oklahoma ran its season-opening win streak to seven matches Friday with a 3-1 victory over Embry-Riddle at the Flagler Saints Classic.

UCO (7-0) won the first of four matches in Florida on Thursday evening and is now 2-for-2 after knocking off ERAU. The Bronchos play Nova Southeastern and Trevecca Nazarene on Saturday to wrap up the trip.

"We did a good job again working together as a team and that's been important for us," UCO head volleyball coach Edgar Miraku said. "A lot of different people are contributing and we're happy with that. We need to continue to play like that tomorrow and keep up the level we're playing at right now."

Central Oklahoma hit .308 as a team on Friday in the four-set victory. The Bronchos hit a blistering .424 in the fourth set to clinch the match. UCO won 25-16 in the first set before ERAU leveled the match with a 25-22 win in the second set. Central picked up a 25-21 win in the third to put the pressure on the opponent before winning the final set 25-17.

Sydney Huck (19), Addison Wimmer (14), and Jenna Karp (13) all recorded double-digit kills to lead the Bronchos. UCO's 65 kills in the match are the second-most this season behind the 68 landed in a five-set win at Angelo State last weekend.

Huck, whose 13 career 20-kill matches ranks sixth in UCO history, nearly had another one on Friday. The junior landed 19 kills on 38 attacks with six errors (.342). Huck also had eight digs, two blocks and one service ace in the match. Her 19 kills is a season high in 2024.

Wimmer landed 14 kills on 31 attacks with just one single error in the match. Hitting .419, Wimmer posted the second-most in a game for herself in this her senior season. She also added five digs.

Karp, who has been sensational at the net this fall, was yet again on Friday. She had 13 kills on 23 attacks with two errors (.478). She added two blocks and one dig on the day.

Lindsey Houran dished out 51 assists to spark the offensive onslaught. The junior setter added 15 digs, two kills, and two service aces as well.

Defensively, Houran's 15 digs led the team. Katie Le added 14 digs as most everyone on the team got involved on the back row. Andrea Coady (nine), Huck (eight), Riley Roberts (seven), Wimmer (five), and Mikiah Perdue (three) all had multiple digs.

Mikaela Garvin chipped in on the offense with eight kills, while Perdue (six), and Houran and Lari Migliorino each had two kills.

An early 8-0 run in the first set gave UCO a 9-2 lead in the frame and the Bronchos held firm with that lead through the end of its 25-16 win.

In the second set, UCO held a late 22-21 lead, but three consecutive errors put ERAU at set point, which they landed on the next play to take the 25-22 win that tied the match, 1-1.

The third set was the most exciting of the day. The Bronchos used an early 6-0 run to take a 10-5 lead. A 7-1 run by ERAU soon followed and the Bronchos trailed 14-12. Central though followed with a 9-2 run and took a 21-16 lead in the match. UCO led by at least three down the stretch before taking the 25-21 win and the 2-1 lead in the match.

In the fourth, UCO had three different 3-0 runs, and ERAU had three different instances it scored on back-to-back possessions. But it was a slow and gradual pullaway by the Bronchos that got them to a 25-17 win in the frame and a 3-1 win in the match.

UCO is ranked No. 18 in the latest AVCA Top 25. Saturday's opponent, Nova Southeastern, is outside of the poll but receiving votes. The Bronchos take on the NSU Sharks at 1 p.m. (EDT) and Trevecca Nazarene at 7 p.m. (EDT) on Saturday.
