No. 18 UCO Sweeps Saints To Stay Unbeaten

Jenna Karp Hit .609 With 15 Kills To Lead the Bronchos

ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. – Jenna Karp continued her hot start to the season with another sensational performance to spark unbeaten Central Oklahoma to a sweep of host Flagler on the first day of the Flagler Saints Classic Thursday night.

Karp -- who entered the match hitting .490 for the season -- was virtually unstoppable. The senior standout hit .609 with 15 kills in 23 attacks with just one error and added five digs as the No. 18-ranked Bronchos dispatched the Saints 26-24, 25-16, 25-22.

UCO improved to 6-0 on the young season with its fourth straight sweep. The Bronchos come back Friday to face Embry-Riddle at 2 p.m. (Central time) before finishing the three-day event with two matches Saturday.

"We played well today," said 13th-year head coach Edgar Miraku, who picked up his 275th career win in improving to 275-90. "I was a little worried since we had a road match Tuesday night and then had a long day of travel yesterday, but the girls came out ready to play today. It was a great start to the tournament and hopefully we can keep it up tomorrow."

Mikaela Garvin also had a strong showing for the Bronchos, hitting .400 with 10 kills in 20 attempts with two errors to go along with three assisted blocks. Addison Wimmer added eight kills, Sydney Huck seven and Lari Migliorino five kills and four blocks.

Lindsey Houran set up the offense with 40 assists, while Katie Le (11 digs) and Riley Roberts (10) keyed the back-row defense.

The first set was a tight back-and-forth battle throughout as neither team led by more than two points. UCO was up 22-20 after a Flagler service error before the Saints scored the next two points to pull even and it was tied again at 23-all.

Huck's kill gave the Bronchos the lead, but Flagler tied it again and then made an attack error to put UCO back on top. Karp then finished it, knocking down a kill at the net to finish off the tough 26-24 win.

The Bronchos used a 5-0 run to overcome an 8-7 deficit and grab the lead for good in the second set. Wimmer, Huck and Garvin all had kills in that spurt, while Huck also teamed with Migliorino for a block.

Karp had three kills and Wimmer two in helping UCO extend that lead to 22-15, with kills by Garvin and Migliorino along with a Flagler error ending the set.

Flagler had an 8-7 lead in the third set in an attempt to stay in the match, but the Bronchos got kills from Garvin, Karp and Wimmer along with a Garvin-Migliorino block during a 5-1 run to take the lead for good at 12-9.

Three Karp kills helped keep UCO safely in front and the lead was 22-16 after Huck drove a shot down the line. The Saints reeled off five straight points to get close at 22-21, but there was no catching the Bronchos.

Garvin knocked down a kill, Sawyer Franz followed with a service ace and Migliorino followed a Flager point with a shot down the middle that closed out the match.
