Bronchos Sweep Bison

No. 18 Central Oklahoma Powered Past Oklahoma Baptist Tuesday Night In Shawnee

SHAWNEE, Okla. – No. 18 Central Oklahoma made quick work of Oklahoma Baptist in a non-conference volleyball match Tuesday night, with the Bronchos pulling away in each set for a 3-0 win.

The Bronchos improved to 5-0 on the young season with the win, the third consecutive three-set sweep.

"We're off to a good start, but we have a busy week ahead so we have to remain focused," UCO head volleyball coach Edgar Miraku said. "The team played good tonight. Oklahoma Baptist is a really good team and we did a good job of limiting our mistakes."

Central Oklahoma heads to the airport Wednesday as the Bronchos prepare for the Flagler Saints Classic in St. Augustine, Florida. UCO plays host Flagler College on Thursday night and Embry-Riddle on Friday. The Bronchos close out the trip with matches against (RV) Nova Southeastern and Trevecca Nazarene on Saturday.

Tuesday night in Shawnee, veteran hitter Sydney Huck led the way as the junior has for three years in the Bronze & Blue. Huck hit a blistering .435 and led the team with 13 kills. The McKinney, Texas native also had 10 digs, two blocks, and one ace.

The Bronchos were firing on all cylinders Tuesday, hitting .418 as a team.

Jenna Karp, a three-time All-MIAA senior middle, tallied eight kills on the night to go with five blocks and four service aces. She hit an incredible .727 on 11 attacks. Addison Wimmer, who had six kills in the first set alone, finished with eight kills and hit .467 on the night.

Mikiah Perdue and Mikaela Garvin both finished with seven kills to bolster the potent Central attack. Perdue hit .545 on 11 attacks.

A well-balanced defensive effort was key for Central on Tuesday. Katie Le and Huck led the way with 10 digs each. Lindsey Houran, who dished out 38 assists, had nine digs. Riley Roberts also had nine and Kaitlyn Parrott added seven.

UCO pulled away in the first set after a 5-5 tie turned into a 20-9 lead for the Bronchos before Central settled on the 25-17 win to go ahead 1-0 in the match.

The Bronchos did the same in the second set, turning a 12-11 score into an 18-13 advantage. After OBU whittled it back to 18-15, Central hit a rally that shook the Bison. The Bronchos would score the last seven points of the set, with two kills for Huck and one each for Karp and Garvin, to take a 25-15 win.

Like clockwork, the third set contained a similar pattern. An 8-6 score turned into 15-6 for Central. After an attack error by OBU, and back-to-back aces from Le, Karp got involved on three consecutive blocks at the net (Garvin joined in on one and Huck on another). Karp and Garvin followed that with back-to-back kills to make it 15-6.

OBU finally stopped the rally, and the third set was 10-10 the rest of the way, but the Bronchos had the advantage and won 25-16 to claim the sweep.

Tuesday marks the third consecutive win for Central Oklahoma over Oklahoma Baptist (2022, 2023, 2024). UCO has won 7 of 8 in the series since 2015 and leads the all-time matchup 7-5.

The two are scheduled to meet again in Edmond next weekend. After UCO's trip to Florida, the Bronchos will co-host with Southern Nazarene a three-day tournament. Central Oklahoma is scheduled to face Southwestern Oklahoma State, Oklahoma Baptist, East Central, and Southeastern Oklahoma State Sept. 19-21 at Hamilton Field House.
