Bronchos Bounced From Playoffs

Central Oklahoma Loses MIAA Baseball Championship First Round Series, 2-0

EDMOND – Central Oklahoma was ousted from the MIAA Baseball Championship following an 9-7 loss to Washburn Saturday afternoon at Wendell Simmons Field.

The Bronchos lost the first-round best-of-three series 2-0 and now will have next weekend off as the league's postseason tournament continues in Pittsburg, Kansas without UCO.

Top-seeded Central Missouri, No. 2 Missouri Southern, No. 3 Pittsburg State, and No. 5 Washburn will all play a double-elimination tournament next weekend to determine the league champion.

Central Oklahoma will now wait until next Sunday, May 11, to find out if the Bronchos will be selected for the NCAA Division II Baseball Championship's Central Regional.

UCO led 4-0 on Saturday, with solo home runs in both the first and second inning sparking the early rally. Carson Carpenter hit one out first, then Garrett Long did too. Caden Robertson pelted a two-RBI double to left, scoring Carpenter and Ty Hammack.

But Washburn chipped its way back into the game, tying it 4-4 in the top of the sixth. The Bronchos went back in front, 6-4, in the bottom half of that inning. Orlando Gonzalez stole second, then advanced to third on a throwing error. Long scored on the error, then Matt Baughn hit a sacrifice fly to score Gonzalez and give the Bronchos a 6-4 lead.

Washburn then went in front with back-to-back home runs in the seventh, but UCO again answered back with a game-tying run via an RBI groundout by Gonzalez that scored Carpenter to make it 7-7.

The visiting Ichabods from Topeka had one more rally in them. A solo home run, a hit batter, and an RBI double in the ninth gave WU its 9-7 lead and UCO couldn't answer back in the bottom of the ninth.

Caleb Burchfield got the start for the Bronchos on Saturday and the senior right-hander struck out four batters in five innings of work. He gave up four runs on seven hits and a walk.

Racer Felter came out of the bullpen and gave up three runs on four hits and a walk in 1 2/3 innings. Chase Yarger followed and also threw 1 2/3 innings. He had three strikeouts and didn't allow a base runner against five batters faced.

Cisneros threw 2/3 of an inning, earning one strikeout, but the two runs on two hits caused him to take the loss in the game.

Central Oklahoma was ranked fifth in the NCAA Central Region rankings last week. Another edition of the rankings will be released Wednesday before the final rounds of conference tournaments wrap up next weekend. The selection show is Sunday night, when UCO hopes to hear its name called for the first time since 2019.
