Bronchos Drop NCAA Opener

Central Oklahoma Scores Three In Top Of First Inning, Falls 4-3 To Augustana

WARRENSBURG, Mo. – Central Oklahoma's early rally wasn't enough as the Bronchos dropped a 4-3 decision in the first round of the NCAA Division II Baseball Championship Central Regional to Augustana.

UCO (36-15) remains alive in the consolation round and will face Minnesota State (37-19) Friday at 2 p.m.

"We just didn't have the offense today," UCO head baseball coach John Martin said. "We got on them early and our pitching was good enough. We just have to be able to press more on offense."

UCO got going right away Thursday night with a rally in the top of the first inning.

Ty Hammack hit a one-out single and Caden Robertson did too before Garett Long drew a walk to load the bases. Then Orlando Gonzalez belted a three-RBI double down the left field line to give UCO an early 3-0 lead.

UCO had baserunners again in the third and fifth innings but couldn't move them around to build on the lead.

On the other side, Caleb Burchfield got the start for the Bronchos and retired the first eight batters in order. Augustana got its first hit of the game from the 9-hole, who then stole second. Augie's second hit of the game followed that and the RBI double put the Vikings from Sioux Falls, South Dakota on the board, 3-1.

Augustana came out strong again in the fourth. A leadoff bunt single, a walk, and an RBI double made it 3-2 and chased Burchfield from the game. Chase Yarger came out of the bullpen and got UCO out of the jam.

UCO sat on the 3-2 lead for the middle part of the game. Yarger threw three scoreless innings and had four strikeouts.

Racer Felter came on to pitch the seventh and struck out the first two batters he faced. However, three consecutive singles followed and Augustana turned the 3-2 deficit into a 4-3 lead, putting UCO behind for the first time in the game.

Austin Burda followed Felter in the eighth and got a 1-2-3 inning to give UCO a chance in the end.

But Augustana brought on a tough lefty that struck out the first two in the ninth and got a pop-up to end the game.

Hammack, Robertson, and Gonzalez got three of UCO's four hits in the top of the first inning. Wyatt Gray added another in the fifth. The Bronchos didn't manage any more.

Central Oklahoma moves to the consolation semifinals with Thursday's loss. The Bronchos will see another Northern Sun program in Minnesota State at 2 p.m. Friday.
