Pense Punishes MSU, Extends UCO Season

Central Oklahoma Beat Minnesota State 2-0 Friday In An NCAA Tournament Elimination Game

WARRENSBURG, Mo. – Brett Pense took a no-hitter to the seventh inning and pitched a one-hit gem through eight before Valek Cisneros closed the door on a 2-0 win for Central Oklahoma in the Central Regional Friday afternoon.

UCO (37-15) defeated Minnesota State (37-19) to stay alive in the consolation bracket. The Bronchos will play Saturday at 2 p.m. against the loser of top-seeded Central Missouri and fourth-seeded Augustana's Friday night matchup.

Pense, a redshirt freshman from Edmond, walked the leadoff in the top of the first inning before retiring the next 18 batters in order. A leadoff double in the top of the seventh broke up the no-hitter, but it didn't deter the All-MIAA right-handed pitcher.

Pense got a groundout after that and then struck out back-to-back batters to get out of the inning. He returned for the eighth and got another 1-2-3 inning before Cisneros entered the game in the ninth.

Cisneros, who was named First Team All-Region earlier this week, gave up a leadoff single, but then got three straight flyouts to end the game and earn his 14th save of the season.

UCO got two runs on five hits Friday and it was more than enough thanks to brilliant pitching. Ty Chapman went 3-for-3 and Orlando Gonzalez went 2-for-3 to lead the way.

Gonzalez hit a double in the second inning, but it was his single in the fifth that led to a run. Wyatt Gray laid down a sacrifice-bunt to move Gonzalez to second, then Chapman singled up the middle to score Gonzalez and give Central Oklahoma a 1-0 lead.

Chapman had singles in the third, fifth, and eighth innings. In the eighth, his leadoff single was followed by a sac-bunt from Kaleb Glass. Chapman moved from first to third on the play, then scored when Ty Hammack hit a sac-fly to right field to give UCO its 2-0 lead.

UCO is playing in its 11th NCAA regional tournament this week. The Bronchos have won at least one game in 10 tournaments following Friday's win over Minnesota State.
