Sharp Performance Gives UCO Sweep Of NSU

Dax Sharp Takes No-Hitter Into Sixth, Bronchos Win 2-1

EDMOND – Dax Sharp took a no-hitter into the sixth inning of Central Oklahoma's midweek MIAA matchup with longtime rival Northeastern State Tuesday, and the junior lefty picked up the win after the Bronchos turned back the Riverhawks 2-1 in the series finale.

Central Oklahoma improved to 30-9 on the season with the win and the Bronchos are now 16-8 in the MIAA. UCO also swept the season series from NSU, 3-0. Northeastern State is 19-20 on the year and 10-14 in league play.

Sharp improved to 3-0 on the season after his gem of a performance on Tuesday. The Pryor, Oklahoma native only struck out one batter, and did walk another, but was on it through five innings. In the sixth, Sharp got the first out on two pitches. But a 2-2 pitch to the NSU 9-hole resulted in a single to second base.

UCO infielder Garrett Long tracked the ball down with a diving stop high up the middle, but his throw had no chance to make the out at first. NSU got one run off that hit in the inning, but that was it. Sharp shut down the Riverhawks and picked up the win.

Caleb Burchfield, a weekend starter, made a one-inning relief appearance after missing a week due to injury. Austin Burda followed with the eighth, then Valek Cisneros followed to pitch the ninth and earn his MIAA leading 13th save of the season.

Burda allowed one hit, Burchfield struck out one batter, and Cisneros two, as the bullpen continued to stimy the NSU offense.

UCO only had one hit of its own going into the bottom of the fifth inning Tuesday, but with two swings of the bat, the Bronchos had all the runs they would need.

Orlando Gonzalez was hit by a pitch to leadoff the inning, then Long singled to the shortstop to put two runners on base. Wyatt Gray then laid down a sacrifice bunt to move the runners into scoring position.

Justin Santoyo was up next and he grounded out to second, scoring Gonzalez to give the Bronchos a 1-0 lead. Kaleb Glass hit an infield single after that to score Long and give UCO a 2-0 lead.

NSU got one back in the next inning, but the 2-1 score held to the end as the Bronchos swept the season series.

UCO is back this weekend with three MIAA home games at Wendell Simmons Field. The Bronchos host Rogers State beginning Friday night.
