Bronchos Drop MSSU Series

Central Oklahoma Gets Run-Ruled Saturday And Sunday After Friday Night Win

JOPLIN, Mo. – Central Oklahoma ran into a buzzsaw for the second day in a row with the 19th-ranked Bronchos getting run-ruled in eight innings at ninth-ranked Missouri Southern Sunday afternoon.

UCO (29-9, 15-8 MIAA) won the first game of the series before MSSU (30-9), 17-6 MIAA) earned a seven-inning run-rule Saturday and the eight-inning ending Sunday. The Bronchos return home for a Tuesday afternoon meeting with Northeastern State. Central Oklahoma has already won the first two games of that league series during previous midweek matchups.

Sunday in Joplin, Southern scored three in the bottom of the first with one swing of the bat to gain an early lead, but the Bronchos had a response. UCO scored four in the top of the second, then another in the third to go in front 5-3. But eight runs over the next three innings, including five in the bottom of the fifth, put the Bronchos in a tight spot. UCO got one more back in the sixth, but three runs in the seventh made it worse and three runs in the eighth ended it early.

Central Oklahoma had seven hits in the game with six going for extra bases. Ryan Strickland and Matt Baughn both had a double and a home run. Carson Carpenter also had a double, and Kaleb Glass also had a solo homer. Orlando Gonzalez added one other hit for UCO.

The Bronchos went through seven pitchers on Sunday and six of them gave up at least one run. Chase Yarger got the start and threw 2 1/3 innings, giving up three runs on two hits. Racer Felter pitched one inning and gave up three runs on three hits. He took the loss for the day and is now 3-1 on the season.

Denton Whiteside threw 2/3 of an inning and is the only arm to not give up a baserunner.

Preston Giltner threw 1/3 of an inning, giving up five runs on three hits. Diego Dominguez threw two innings, allowing two runs on two hits. Austin Burda threw 2/3 of the bottom of the eighth inning and gave up one run on two hits. And Matthew Engler threw the final 1/3, giving up three runs on three hits.

Strickland tied the game with one swing of the bat in the top of the second inning, blasting his fourth home run of the season over the fence in center field. He scored Gonzalez and Cameron Uselton on the play. Baughn followed with a solo shot to make it 4-3. Glass hit his solo shot in the third to make it 5-3. Gonzalez scored on a wild pitch in the sixth inning to give UCO its sixth run of the day.

Central Oklahoma ends the week in third place in the MIAA with three weeks left in the regular season. The top four teams in the league standings will host a best-of-three series in the first round of the MIAA Baseball Championship (May 3-5). The four advancing teams will meet in Pittsburg, Kansas for the finals, a three-day, double-elimination tournament.

UCO hosts NSU Tuesday to wrap up that series. The Bronchos are scheduled to host Rogers State (19-16, 10-13 MIAA), visit Washburn (19-16, 13-10), and host Northwest Missouri (17-20, 9-14), to wrap up the league schedule. UCO also has a midweek non-conference road trip to Arkansas Tech after Rogers State and before Washburn.
