Central Oklahoma Drops Game 2, Will Play For Series Sunday

Broncho Bats Go Cold, Missouri Southern Evens Series With 11-1 Run-Rule

JOPLIN, Mo. – Central Oklahoma dropped Game 2 at Missouri Southern Saturday afternoon when a late rally by the host Lions got away from the Bronchos to the tune of an 11-1 seven-inning run rule.

Central Oklahoma is now 29-8 on the season overall, and 15-7 in the MIAA. Missouri Southern improved to 29-9 on the season and is 16-6 in league play. The teams will play the third and final game of the MIAA series Sunday at noon.

UCO fell behind 2-0 in the bottom of the first inning Saturday when a fielding error allowed the first run to score and an RBI single followed.

The Bronchos got one back in the second. Kaleb Glass was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning, then Haden O'Toole hit a one-out double to put both in scoring position. A sacrifice fly by Matt Baughn scored Glass to make it 2-1.

Brett Pense got the start for the Bronchos and was solid in six innings of work. He gave up five runs on six hits and a walk but struck out five batters.

He left the game after six with Missouri Southern leading 5-1.

Then the big rally happened. Eric Rohrer came on to pitch in the seventh and gave up a double before striking out the next batter. However, a walk, a hit batter, and a two-RBI double followed.

Brandon Gomez came out to relieve Rohrer and he struck out the first batter he faced. However, the dropped third strike allowed the batter to reach and another runner to score. Then on a stolen base attempt, a throwing error gave MSSU another run and a 9-1 lead.

Gomez gave up a two-run home run on the next at bat for the walkoff run-rule victory for the hosts.

UCO left 10 runners on base and struck out 10 times on Saturday. Aidan Proctor and Glass both managed singles, while Caden Robertson and O'Toole both had doubles in the game. Those four base knocks were the only hits of the day for the Bronchos.

Missouri Southern moved back into second place, one game in front of Central Oklahoma, with Saturday's win. The winner of Sunday's finale earns the series and the potential tiebreaker later in the season.

Game 3 is Sunday at noon.
