Bronchos Take Game 1 In Joplin

Central Oklahoma Gets The First One In Top 25 MIAA Series

JOPLIN, Mo. – No. 19 Central Oklahoma handed No. 9 Missouri Southern just its second home loss of the season Friday night when the Bronchos won 7-5 in the MIAA series opener.

Central Oklahoma is now 29-7 on the season, and 15-6 in the MIAA. Southern is 28-9 on the season, and also 15-6 in league play. The two teams are tied for second in the league standings with Game 2 Saturday at 1 p.m. Game 3 is scheduled for Sunday at 1 p.m.

Friday night, Central Oklahoma jumped out to an early 3-0 lead with two in the second and one in the third. Missouri Southern tied it up with one swing of the bat in the third, but the Bronchos came back with one more in the fourth to go back in front.

UCO jumped out to a 7-3 in the top of the seventh before Southern got two back in the bottom half to make it the final, 7-5.

Racer Felter picked up yet another win out of the bullpen for his efforts to get UCO out of a jam in the bottom of the fifth. The senior right-hander who was named NCBWA Central Region Pitcher of the Week following his MIAA Pitcher of the Week selection, came on with two outs in the bottom of the fifth and did give up a hit, but got an inning-ending groundout with two runners on base.

Brady Gilmore got the start for Central Friday and threw 4 2/3 innings, allowing just four hits and three runs – two earned – to one of the best offenses in the league. Gilmore struck out four batters in the start.

Austin Burda followed Felter out of the bullpen in the sixth, and got one out in the seventh before Preston Giltner followed him out to the mound. Burda gave up two unearned runs on two walks, but also struck out two batters. Giltner gave up just one hit and one walk while getting through one inning of work.

Chase Yarger came on to pitch with one out in the eighth and two runners on base. He got a groundout, hit the next batter to load the bases, then got another groundout to end the inning with the bases loaded.

Valek Cisneros came on to pitch the bottom of the ninth and got a 1-2-3 inning to earn his 12th save of the season.

Central Oklahoma got its first two runs thanks to an aggressive start. The Bronchos nearly had one in the first inning with a runner in scoring position. But in the second, Kaleb Glass led off with a single and Orlando Gonzalez was hit by a pitch. After a sacrifice-bunt by Haden O'Toole, Matt Baughn hit a sac-fly to right to score Glass.

Gonzalez moved to third, then scored on Garrett Long's single to right field. The Bronchos had the bases loaded with Caden Robertson at the plate but the junior outfielder struck out with UCO up 2-0 in the second.

In the third, it was Glass that was hit by a pitch and Gonzalez who found a single. Then Baughn had an RBI single to score Glass and give UCO a 3-0 lead.

The seventh inning rally started with a Gonzalez double and O'Toole walk to start the inning. Baughn then laid down a sac-bunt to move the runners and Long had an RBI single to score Gonzalez and give UCO a 5-3 lead.

Long and O'Toole were both in scoring position after a sac-bunt from Aidan Proctor, then back-to-back wild pitches scored both runners to give UCO the 7-3 lead.

Gonzalez finished the day 3-for-3 with two runs and an RBI. Proctor, Carpenter, Glass, and Long all had two hits, and Baughn had another to give Central 12 on the day.

Central Oklahoma and Missouri Southern will be back on the diamond at 1 p.m. Saturday for the second game of the three-game series. The two schools will close it out at the same time Sunday afternoon.
