UCO Takes Game 1, Clinches Home Playoff Series

Bronchos Beat Bearcats 10-3 In MIAA Series Opener

EDMOND – No. 20 Central Oklahoma won its MIAA series opener 10-3 against Northwest Missouri Friday night and clinched a home playoff series with the victory.

UCO improved to 35-11 on the season with the win and the Bronchos are now 21-10 in the MIAA. Central Oklahoma is now locked into the top four and will host a first-round best-of-three series in the MIAA Baseball Championships May 3-5.

"It was good to see the guys get after it tonight," UCO head baseball coach John Martin said. "Pitching was good and the bats were too. You always like it when both are going at the same time. We still need to stay focused the rest of the weekend."

UCO redshirt freshman Brett Pense got the start and was dominant through six innings in picking up the win. The Edmond native struck out eight batters while allowing just two runs on two hits. After two strikeouts in the top of the fourth, a walk was followed by a home run but that was all Pense conceded on Friday night.

Racer Felter followed Pense and was also solid in two innings of work. He struck out two batters and gave up one unearned run on one hit. Brandon Gomez followed in the ninth and struck out one batter while also giving up one hit.

UCO jumped out to an early lead, scoring twice in each of the first two innings before a four-run fourth.

Carson Carpenter, Caden Robertson, and Garrett Long all had two hits, and Kaleb Glass, Shea Morrison, Orlando Gonzalez, and Wyatt Gray all had base knocks as well.

In the bottom of the first, Glass led off with a walk before stealing second base. Ty Hammack also walked and then Carpenter laid down a sacrifice bunt – and reached on a fielding error on the play.

Robertson then hit into a fielder's choice but scored Glass on the play. Gonzalez dropped down a two-out bunt single to score Hammack and give UCO an early 2-0 lead.

In the second, it was Gray who led off with a walk before Justin Santoyo reached on a hit by pitch. Glass followed with a sac-bunt, then Hammack hit a sac-fly to right field to score Gray. Carpenter followed that with a double to left center to score Santoyo and give UCO a 4-0 lead.

After NWMSU scored its two in the fourth, UCO had an answer.

Robertson's double to right center field scored Hammack, then Morrison followed with a double over the center fielder to score both Carpenter and Robertson. A sac-fly by Long scored Morrison to make it 8-2, Bronchos.

Robertson scored Carpenter in the sixth, and Long hit a solo homer out to right field in the seventh to give UCO its final two runs and the 10-3 advantage.

Central Oklahoma and Northwest Missouri are scheduled to play Game 2 at 3 p.m. Saturday, though weather forecasted might change that plan. UCO wraps up the three-game series Sunday at 1 p.m. and is considering a doubleheader if Saturday is rained out.
