Bronchos Win Season Finale In Walkoff Fashion

Kaleb Glass Scored Austin Oldham In Bottom Of 11th Inning

EDMOND – After having its Saturday game suspended due to inclement weather, and then falling short in the resumption Sunday afternoon, Central Oklahoma got some extra-inning heroics from its season leader to end the 2024 regular season with a win.

Kaleb Glass hit an infield single about 15 feet back to the pitcher to score Austin Oldham from third and give No. 20 UCO a 7-6 walkoff win in the bottom of the 11th inning in Game 3 against Northwest Missouri.

Central Oklahoma finished the 2024 regular season 36-12 overall and 22-11 in the MIAA. The Bronchos will be the No. 4 seed in next week's MIAA Baseball Championship and are hosting a first-round best-of-three series against Washburn May 3-5.

Northwest Missouri (21-28, 12-21 MIAA) earned a 9-4 win earlier Sunday to clinch a playoff spot. The Bearcats will be either the No. 7 or No. 8 seed depending on the result of Monday's Emporia State vs. Newman contest.

Weather wreaked havoc on the Midwest over the weekend and caused numerous changes to the sports calendar. That included UCO vs. Northwest Saturday afternoon in Edmond. The Bronchos had already won Game 1 Friday night, but the Bearcats had a 3-1 in the bottom of the second and following a strikeout for the first out of the inning, lightning caused a delay that turned into a suspended game.

Sunday at noon, following a celebration of UCO's 12 seniors, the game resumed. And in the third inning, it was Glass with a solo home run to cut the lead to one. Northwest had an answer though in the fourth and this became the theme of the game.

The Bearcats scored one unearned run in the fourth on a throwing error and another on an RBI double down the line to go in front 5-2.

UCO got closer with more solo homers. Caden Robertson hit one out in the fourth and Ty Hammack did in the fifth. Hammack dislocated his shoulder on his swing of the bat that sent a pitch more than 400 feet over the fence in center field.

The 5-4 game held over the next few innings before Northwest put it away in the ninth. The Bearcats had an RBI double, RBI single, and a two-RBI home run to give NWMSU a 9-4 lead, and the win.

Brady Gilmore started the game on Saturday and was credited with the loss – his first of the season (3-1). Chase Yarger was on the mound for the restart. He threw five innings, allowing two runs on two hits. Austin Burda threw two innings and gave up four runs on six hits.

The teams took a short break and returned to the field for the third and final game of the series and the season.

Caleb Burchfield got the start for the Bronchos and was solid in 4 2/3 innings of work. He gave up a solo home run in the second and then another on an RBI groundout in the fifth. Burchfield struck out five batters and allowed just three hits and two walks.

Orlando Gonzalez hit an RBI triple to left center in the fourth that tied the game when Ryan Strickland scored from first on the play. Garrett Long scored on a dropped third strike in the fifth to tie the game again, 2-2. Long was on third and when Northwest threw down to first on the dropped third strike, he darted home for the score.

Cameron Uselton pelted a solo home run in the bottom of the sixth inning to give UCO its first lead since Friday night, 3-2.

Northwest flipped the script though with four runs in the top of the seventh, taking a 6-3 lead. Long was back up again though and he launched a solo homer to right center to get one run back.

Later in the seventh, it was Glass coming up with a single before he got two free bases on a failed pickoff throwing error. Carson Carpenter took the next pitch over the fence in right field to tie the game, 6-6.

UCO went 1-2-3 in both the eighth and ninth innings, then had a small chance as the game went extras. Uselton hit a one-out single and Aidan Proctor pinch-ran for him. Then Strickland drew a walk, but Proctor would get picked off on second after that. Gonzalez grounded out and the game went to the 11th.

Wyatt Gray hit a leadoff single and Austin Oldham pinch-ran for him. Long then laid down a sacrifice bunt, and Haden O'Toole hit a ground ball to second, moving Oldham over to the third as Glass came to the plate with two outs.

He watched two pitches before swinging and connecting on a ball that bounced off the turf and hit high in the air about 15 feet in front of the plate. The Northwest pitcher gathered the ball and threw to first, but Glass beat it out as Oldham crossed home plate for the game-winning score.

Glass finished Sunday 5-for-11 with a home run, two RBIs, two runs scored, and one stolen base.

Uselton went 2-for-5 in Game 3 with a home run and Long went 1-for-2 with the home run and two runs scored.

Preston Giltner and Racer Felter pitched in Game 3, with Giltner giving up three runs on four hits and Felter one run on one hit. Valek Cisneros came in he could keep Northwest at bay while UCO's offense tried to win in the eighth, ninth, or 10th inning.

The star closer threw 3.0 innings and struck out four batters in keeping the Bearcats off the board. UCO turned to Diego Dominguez for one more inning and he struck out two in the 11th before picking up the win following Glass's RBI single to win it.

Central Oklahoma earned a 2-1 win in the series with Northwest. Finishing 22-11, the Bronchos won 7 of 11 series this season and earned four 3-0 sweeps of league opponents.

UCO will face Washburn next weekend in a best-of-three series in Edmond. The winner will advance to the MIAA Baseball Championship's four-team double elimination tournament in Pittsburg, Kansas May 9-11. The Bronchos won 2 of 3 in Topeka last weekend.
