Pipkin Shutout Gives UCO Split With Lions

Bronchos Drop Game 1 5-3 Before Taking Nightcap 6-0

JOPLIN, Mo. – Jordyn Pipkin threw a four-hitter in a 6-0 second-game shutout to give Central Oklahoma a doubleheader split with Missouri Southern Wednesday afternoon.

The No. 5-ranked Bronchos gave up four late runs in dropping a 5-3 decision in the opener before bouncing back in the nightcap. UCO is now 41-9 on the season – with seven of its nine losses by one or two runs – and 21-3 in Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association play.

"Jordyn really pitched a great game when we needed it," head coach Cody White said. "We lost a tough one to start the day, but I was proud of the way we put that behind us and focused on getting the split.

"We have two huge games coming up and I know our players are looking forward to that challenge."

The Bronchos end the regular season Saturday at No. 9 Pittsburg State. The Gorillas swept Newman Wednesday and are tied atop the league standings with UCO, while No. 12 Rogers State is 19-3 with four games remaining this weekend.

Pipkin was masterful in notching her ninth complete game and sixth shutout of the season. The junior right-hander scattered four hits, walked two and struck out six in moving to 15-3.

UCO provided Pipkin with the only runs she needed in the top of the first.

Rylee Lemos walked to lead off the game and swiped second before cruising home on Terin Ritz's single to left field. Jacee Minter singled, then McKenna Johnson and Tatum Long drew consecutive walks to force in another run and make it 2-0.

Long got the Bronchos going in the fourth with a one-out double down the left field line and scooted home on Rylee Anglen's two-out single up the middle. UCO added to its cushion with three more runs in the sixth.

Again Long was the catalyst, drilling a lead-off double to right-center before giving way to pinch-runner Brooklyn Ryan. Sherri Mason's sacrifice bunt moved Ryan over and Anglen reached on a fielder's choice to put runners on the corners.

Lemos followed with an RBI single, Emily Deramus drove home Anglen with a groundout and Ritz's run-scoring double to left-center upped Central's lead to 6-0.

The Bronchos finished with nine hits, getting two each from Lemos, Long and Ritz.

UCO jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the opener only to see the Lions pull out a late comeback to snap a 20-game losing streak in the series.

Lemos opened the game with her sixth homer of the season, this one a shot to right field. Deramus walked, Ritz reached on an error and Minter singled to left field to drive in Deramus to make it 2-0.

The Bronchos made it 3-0 in the top of the third when Long led off with a drive over the left field fence for her sixth homer of the year. MSSU answered that with a solo homer of its own in the bottom of the frame and then surged in front in the fifth.

The Lions opened the inning with a walk, hit batter and infield single to load the bases before UCO got two quick outs on a short fly out to Minter in left and a force out at home on a weak grounder back to Ritz in the circle.

But MSSU came through with a pair of two-out, two-run singles to grab a 5-3 lead and the Bronchos had no answer in their final two at bats.

Ritz took the loss in falling to 19-5 on the season. Six different players had one hit apiece to lead the offense.
