Bronchos Drop Two At Pitt State

UCO Finishes Third In MIAA Standings, Host League Tourney Next Week

PITTSBURG, Kan. – Nothing went right for Central Oklahoma Saturday as the No. 5-ranked Bronchos dropped a doubleheader to No. 9 Pittsburg State in the regular season finale.

UCO fell to 41-11 with the two losses and finished third in the final Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association standings at 21-5. The Gorillas and No. 12 Rogers State tied for the league title at 23-3, with the Hillcats earning the No. 1 seed for next week's MIAA Softball Championship.

The Bronchos will host that 10-team, single-elimination tournament Wednesday-Saturday, May 1-4, at Gerry Pinkston Stadium. UCO opens against sixth-seeded Emporia State at 4 p.m. Thursday.

"We made too many mistakes and didn't play at all like we're capable of," head coach Cody White said. "That's not a good combination against a team as good as Pitt State. They outplayed us in every aspect.

"It's a disappointing way to finish the regular season, but there's nothing we can do about it now. We just have to shake it off and get our minds right for the conference tournament. All our main goals are still in front of us."

A bevy of mistakes put the Bronchos in a big hole early in the first game, leading to the run-rule loss.

UCO had an error in each of the first three innings and the Gorillas capitalized, scoring six unearned runs in jumping to an insurmountable 9-0 lead.

The Bronchos managed just three hits, two of those coming in the fourth when UCO scored its only runs. Jacee Minter kept the inning alive with a two-out single to center field and McKenna Johnson followed with a shot to left field for her first home run of the season.

PSU made it 10-2 in the bottom of the frame and the Bronchos went down in order in the top of the fifth to end the contest.

UCO fell behind early in the second contest as well, giving up two runs in the second and another in the third to trail 3-0.

It stayed that way until the fifth when the Bronchos got back in the game on Lemos' two-run homer. Layne Smith had a one-out single through the left side and Lemos' two-out blast to left-center pulled UCO within 3-2.

But the Gorillas got those two runs back in the bottom of the sixth to go up 5-2 and the Bronchos didn't threaten in their final at bat.
