No. 8 Bronchos Calm Storm

Central Oklahoma Wins 30th Game Of The Season With Doubleheader Sweep

EDMOND – A cut finger on her pitching hand didn't faze Central Oklahoma's Jordyn Pipkin in the second game of Tuesday's home doubleheader with Southeastern Oklahoma.

The junior right-hander tossed a complete-game four-hitter in a 2-0 shutout despite having to redress the wound at least twice and being forced to change jerseys between innings after getting blood on the original.

The No. 8-ranked Bronchos also got a stellar pitching outing from Terin Ritz and a key two-run single from Jacee Minter in a 4-1 first-game win. UCO moved to 30-6 – its 12th straight 30-win season besides the COVID-shortened 2020 campaign and has now won 23 games in a row.

"I wasn't sure what we would get out of Jordyn because of her finger, but she wanted to try it and I'm glad she did," head coach Cody White said. "She stayed focused, didn't let it affect her and pitched great.

"We struggled a little offensively, but Southeastern has a good team and we found a way to score enough runs to come out with two good wins."

Pipkin struck out three and walked one while scattering four hits in throwing her second straight shutout, improving to 11-3 on the season. The Bronchos provided solid defense, especially from second baseman Rylee Anglen and shortstop McKenna Johnson.

Johnson had two of UCO's seven hits and was the catalyst when the Bronchos broke a scoreless tie in the bottom of the fourth with a lead-off double to right-center field. Shayleigh Odom followed with a first-pitch double to left-center to make it 1-0.

Anglen provided UCO with an insurance run in the sixth with a clutch two-out RBI double. Odom opened the inning with single up the middle, pinch-runner Brooklyn Ryan went to second when Layne Smith was hit by a pitch and Anglen's hit to right field made it 2-0.

Ritz threw her fifth straight complete game in the opener and won for the 14th consecutive time in moving to 15-2. She gave up six hits, including three in the top of the first when SOSU scored its lone run to end Ritz's 15-inning scoreless streak.

The Savage Storm held that 1-0 lead until the fifth when UCO broke through for three runs. Rylee Lemos reached on a fielder's choice, Sherri Mason singled and Ritz walked to load the bases for Minter, who came through with a two-run single to left.

Johnson kept things going with a single through the left side, then Odom made it 3-1 with an RBI groundout.

The Bronchos added an insurance run in the sixth. Lemos again reached on a fielder's choice and the speedy sophomore stole second before scoring on Mason's triple down the left field line.

Mason went 3-for-3 to lead Central's nine-hit attack, while Johnson added two hits. Lemos led off the bottom of the first with a single up the middle to extend her hitting streak to 20, breaking the previous school record of 19 set by Kaycee Raines in 2012.

The Bronchos return to Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association play this weekend with road doubleheaders against Central Missouri and Lincoln.
