UCO Overpowers SNU In Edmond

Bronchos Get Big Lead, Hang On For Non-Conference Win

EDMOND – A pair of big rallies at the beginning and middle parts of Central Oklahoma's midweek non-conference game against Southern Nazarene paved the way for the Bronchos to earn their fifth consecutive win with an 8-5 decision at Wendell Simmons Field.

Central Oklahoma improved to 28-7 on the season with the win. The Bronchos are also 14-6 in the MIAA and return to league play this weekend.

UCO had just six hits on Tuesday evening, but a three-run inside-the-park home run by Ryan Strickland in the bottom of the first, and a two-RBI double by Carson Carpenter followed by a two-RBI home run Caden Robertson back-to-back in the fourth inning gave the Bronchos seven runs on just three hits.

Strickland took a 2-0 pitch to left center in the bottom of the first inning after Robertson drew a walk and Uselton doubled to right field. Two SNU defenders both missed on diving attempts for the fly ball and all three Bronchos scored to give UCO an early 3-0 lead.

Ty Chapman hit a bases-loaded single to right field in the third inning to give UCO a 4-1 lead.

In the fourth, Garrett Long hit a one-out double to right center, then Kaleb Glass drew a walk. Both runners stole a base before Carpenter pelted a two-RBI double to right to make it 6-1. On the next pitch, Robertson hit his fourth home run of the season over the fence in right to give UCO an 8-1 lead.

The Bronchos used seven pitchers on Tuesday with starter Dax Sharp going 4 1/3. The lefty gave up two runs on five hits and three walks. Denton Whiteside came on with the bases loaded in the fifth and got a strikeout before Chase Yarger followed him out of the pen.

Yarger threw 1 1/3, allowing two hits and recording two strikeouts. He earned the win in the game.

Brandon Gomez threw 2/3 of an inning, giving up two runs on three hits and two walks. Peyton Medeiros also threw 2/3 of an inning, giving up one run on two hits. Both struck out one batter.

Austin Burda threw four pitches to get two outs in the eighth inning. And Valek Cisneros came out of the bullpen to throw the final frame, earning his 11th save of the season. Cisneros struck out one batter and got two groundouts to end the game.

Central Oklahoma hits the road for the weekend and has a big MIAA series on tap. The Bronchos visit Missouri Southern for a three-game set beginning Friday night in Joplin. UCO will also play Saturday and Sunday afternoon. MSSU is 28-8 overall this season, 15-5 in the MIAA, and was ranked No. 8 in the country last week.
