Bronchos Win Opener At Washburn

Central Oklahoma Takes Game 1 9-5 In Crucial Late Season MIAA Series

TOPEKA, Kan. – Central Oklahoma opened its crucial MIAA series at Washburn Friday evening with a 9-5 win.

The Bronchos improved to 33-10 on the season with the win, and more importantly, 19-9 in the MIAA. The victory keeps UCO in third place in the league standings with five games remaining. Washburn is now 23-18 on the year and 17-11 in the MIAA, which puts the Ichabods in fifth place.

The top four teams in the final MIAA standings host a best-of-three playoff series in two weeks.

"It was a good start, but we know we still have a lot of work to do," UCO head baseball coach John Martin said. "They're a good team and they're going to be better tomorrow. We have to stay focused all weekend."

Brett Pense got the start for the Bronchos and the redshirt freshman was solid in 6 1/3 innings of work. Pense allowed seven hits and a walk as three runners crossed home on his watch. He also struck out six batters on the day.

Denton Whiteside followed with 1/3 of an inning, getting a flyout before Racer Felter followed him out of the bullpen. Felter threw one inning, allowed one hit, and struck out another batter.

Austin Burda came on to get the final out of the eighth inning, then finished the game allowing two runs on two hits and two walks. But he also struck out three batters in the ninth inning.

UCO scattered 11 hits in the game, including seven for extra bases.

Caden Robertson led the way going 3-for-5 with three doubles and two RBIs. Kaleb Glass went 2-for-3 with a double and two runs scored. Carson Carpenter also went 2-for-4 with a three-run home run, a double, and two runs scored.

Ty Hammack also got a hit in his return to play following an absence for injury. Shea Morrison added an RBI on a 1-for-3 day, and Wyatt Gray also went 1-for-4 with a run scored.

Aidan Proctor went 1-for-4 as well, plating Gray when he launched a two-run home run in the fourth inning.

Central Oklahoma plays Washburn again at 2 p.m. Saturday in Game 2. The Bronchos and the Ichabods will wrap up the series Sunday.

UCO hosts Northwest Missouri in the final series of the season next weekend in Edmond. Washburn plays at Northeastern State. NSU routed NWMSU in Game 1 of their series Friday in Maryville.
