Bronchos Take Game 2, Series At Washburn

Central Oklahoma Wins 7-3 Saturday, One Win Away From Home Playoff Series

TOPEKA, Kan. – Central Oklahoma clinched the MIAA series at Washburn Saturday with a 7-3 win in Game 2 of the three-game set.

The Bronchos improved to 34-10 on the season with the win, and 20-9 in the MIAA. Washburn is now 23-19 overall and 17-12 in league play. UCO needs just one more win in any of its final four games of the season to clinch a home playoff series.

Central Oklahoma plays at Washburn Sunday at 1 p.m., then hosts Northwest Missouri next weekend for three games April 26-28. The MIAA Baseball Championship begins May 3-5 with the top four teams in the league hosting best-of-three series on their respective campuses. The four advancing teams will meet in Pittsburg, Kansas for a double-elimination tournament to determine the league champion.

Caleb Burchfield got the start for the Bronchos on Saturday and the senior right-hander was dominant in six innings of work. He pitched a full 6.0 innings, allowed only five hits and two walks, and struck out three batters. He left with the Bronchos leading 7-0 in the ball game.

Racer Felter came out of the bullpen first, and Denton Whiteside and Preston Giltner also followed him in the seventh inning.

Washburn scored three unearned runs on three hits and two errors in the seventh. All were charged to Felter. Whiteside got a flyout and Giltner a flyout and a strikeout to get UCO out of the inning.

Chase Yarger pitched the eighth and got a groundout, a walk, and a double play for a quick inning. Then Valek Cisneros came on in the ninth. Washburn reached on a one-out error and a walk, but Cisneros got a strikeout and a groundout to end the game.

Central Oklahoma's 7-0 lead came thanks to a middle of the game rally by the Bronchos.

UCO got one run in the top of the second inning when Orlando Gonzalez hit a solo home run to left field. Carson Carpenter hit a sacrifice-fly to center field that scored Haden O'Toole to make it 2-0.

But in the sixth inning, Ryan Strickland started a rally with a solo home run to left center that made it 3-0. Garrett Long followed with a one-out single, then Matt Baughn did the same. O'Toole made it three in a row and scored Long to give UCO a 4-0 lead. Ty Hammack added a two-out RBI single to score Baughn and give the Bronchos a 5-0 lead.

In the seventh, UCO added to it.

Strickland drew a one-out walk and moved to second on a Gonzalez groundout. He would score when Long pelted a double down the right field line that made it 6-0. Baughn followed that with a single to left that scored Long from second to make it 7-0.

Long led the Bronchos, going 3-for-5 with two doubles, two runs scored, and one RBI. Hammack went 2-for-5 with a double and an RBI, and Baughn 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored. Strickland, Gonzalez and O'Toole each added one hit apiece. The trio scored four combined runs.

Central Oklahoma looks to sweep the season series from Washburn for the second year in a row. The Bronchos have swept four MIAA series out of nine this season.
