Bronchos Top Rogers State In Showdown Sweep

EDMOND – A fast start and dramatic ending gave Central Oklahoma a sweep of Rogers State Friday afternoon in a thrilling showdown between two NCAA Division II powerhouses.

The No. 8-ranked Bronchos scored four first-inning runs and cruised to an 8-2 first-game victory, then used a two-run rally in the bottom of the seventh to beat the No. 4 Hillcats 5-4 in the nightcap.

Jacee Minter slid across home plate with the winning run in the seventh, scoring on a wild pitch to complete the sweep and send the boisterous Gerry Pinkston Stadium crowd into a frenzy.

"That was a heck of a ball game and a great battle between two really good teams that have a lot of respect for each other," head coach Cody White said. "We got down early and couldn't get much going offensively, but we hung in there and eventually made some things happen.

"We talked about getting off to a good start in the first game and fortunately were able to do that. The crowd was great today and hats off to our wrestling team for showing up like they did. Those were two big-time wins for us."

UCO improved to 35-7 for the season and took over the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association lead at 15-1, having now won 28 of its last 29 games. RSU fell to 34-8 and 17-3.

The Bronchos fell into a 2-0 hole in the top of the first in the second game and needed strong defense from second baseman Rylee Anglen and center fielder Shayleigh Odom to keep it there.

UCO didn't threaten until the fourth, scoring twice to tie it.

Terin Ritz led off with a line-drive double to left-center and Minter followed with a triple that landed just inside foul territory down the right field line before bouncing into the corner. McKenna Johnson then drove a single to left field to make it 2-2.

Rogers scored twice in the top of the fifth to regain the lead, with the Bronchos getting one back in the sixth.

Johnson led off with a bloop hit to left field, Odom drew a walk after getting behind 0-2 on the count and Sherri Mason moved both runners with a sacrifice bunt. Tatum Long's pinch-hit bloop RBI single to right field made it 4-3 and set the stage for the final-inning drama.

Emily Deramus started the winning rally with a lead-off, first-pitch single to center field and moved to second on an error. Ritz walked and Minter lined a first-pitch single through the right side to load the bases.

Johnson then drew a full-count walk to force in Deramus with the tying run. The Hillcats got an out, but a 1-1 pitch to Mason sailed over the catcher and Minter scurried home ahead of the tag to set off a celebration behind the plate.

Johnson went 3-for-3 to lead UCO's 10-hit attack, while Deramus and Minter each had two hits. Shelby Beard picked up the pitching win in relief, giving up four hits and two runs with three strikeouts in the final four innings.

The Bronchos needed no such heroics in the opener.

Rylee Lemos and Deramus opened the first inning with consecutive singles and Ritz walked to load the bases before Minter pushed across the first run with a bloop single. Johnson drew an RBI walk, Odom followed with a sacrifice fly and UCO added another score on an error to make it 4-0.

RSU scored once in the top of the second, but Ritz answered that in emphatic fashion in the bottom of the frame, launching a two-out missile over the scoreboard in left-center field for her 16th home run of the season.

It stayed 5-1 until the sixth when the Bronchos added three insurance runs, getting RBI hits from Minter and Odom and a run-scoring fielder's choice from Johnson.

The Hillcats added a consolation score in the top of the seventh before Ritz closed out her 11th complete game. The junior right-hander scattered seven hits, didn't walk a batter and fanned four in moving to 17-3.

Deramus and Minter had two hits apiece to pace a nine-hit offensive attack.

UCO wraps up the regular season home schedule Saturday, hosting Northeastern State at 2 p.m. on Senior Day. The Bronchos will recognize five seniors between games Saturday against NSU – Long, Minter, Makella Mobly, Brooke Niver and Odom.
