UCO Sweeps RiverHawks For Senior Sendoff

Bronchos Win 19th Straight Home Game In Convincing Fashion

EDMOND – Shayleigh Odom had quite the ending to her final regular season home game Saturday afternoon, blasting a grand slam and driving in a career-high six runs during a 10-1 second-game rout that completed Central Oklahoma's doubleheader sweep of Northeastern State.

The No. 8-ranked Bronchos coasted to a 7-0 shutout in the opener behind Terin Ritz's four-hitter before Odom led the way in the nightcap. UCO ran its Gerry Pinkston Stadium winning streak to 19 with the sweep while moving to 37-7 on the season and 17-1 in Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association play.

It was final regular season home appearance for five seniors – Odom, Tatum Long, Jacee Minter, Makella Mobly and Brooke Niver – and each had at least one hit on the day.

"That was a great way to end our home schedule," head coach Cody White said. "It's always an emotional day when we honor our seniors and I was really proud of how each of them performed today because they each mean so much to our program.

"Coming back today after getting two such big wins yesterday wasn't easy, but I thought we handled it pretty well. We've put ourselves in good position, but we have two tough weeks ahead of us and need to keep moving forward."

UCO swept No. 4 Rogers State Friday in taking over the conference lead and finishes the regular season with eight straight road games looking to nail down its second straight league title. The Bronchos will host the MIAA Softball Championship May 1-5.

NSU kept the Bronchos at bay in the early stages of the first game before UCO finally broke through in the fourth, parading 12 batters to the plate in erupting for six runs.

Ritz got things going with a lead-off single to left field, Minter had a high fly to right drop in for a hit and McKenna Johnson broke the scoreless deadlock with a double to left-center. Odom followed with a sacrifice fly and Long kept the inning going with a first-pitch RBI single to left.

The RiverHawks finally got a couple of outs, but an error extended the inning and Emily Deramus made NSU pay with a two-run single up the middle. Ritz and Minter were hit by pitch on consecutive at bats to force in the final run and make it 6-0.

The Bronchos ended the scoring in the fifth. Odom led off with a bloop single to left, went to third on back-to-back groundouts and trotted home on Rylee Anglen's single to left.

Ritz went 2-for-2 to lead UCO's nine-hit attack and also threw another complete game in the circle. The junior standout gave up four hits without a walk, struck out four and secured her fourth shutout in moving to 18-3.

The Bronchos didn't waste as much time taking control in the nightcap, pushing across four runs in each of the first two innings.

Minter had an RBI single and Odom a run-scoring fielder's choice, with another run scoring on an error and Odom going home on a wild pitch in the first.

Deramus led off with the second with a single up the middle, Minter reached on a fielder's choice and Johnson walked to load the bases for Odom. The senior quickly cleared them, launching a no-doubt bomb high over the left field fence for her fourth homer of the season.

The onslaught continued in the third as NSU hit three batters and walked another. Odom delivered another RBI, this one on a single to right, and Johnson had a run-scoring fielder's choice in pushing UCO's cushion to 10-0.

The RiverHawks scored their lone run in the top of the fifth, but it wasn't enough to extend the game.

Odom went 2-of-3 with the career-best six RBIs to lead an eight-hit assault. Jordyn Pipkin picked up the pitching win, improving to 17-3 after giving up two hits and two walks with two strikeouts in the first four innings.
