No. 12 UCO Opens MIAA Play With Sweep

EDMOND (March 9) – Shayleigh Odom came through with a clutch two-out run-scoring single in the fifth inning to give Central Oklahoma a 2-1 lead and Jordyn Pipkin kept Washburn at bay the rest of the way to complete a Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association sweep Saturday afternoon.

Rylee Lemos went 3-for-4 while also scoring three runs and Terin Ritz went the distance in the circle in a 6-2 first-game victory for the No. 12-ranked Bronchos, who stretched their winning streak to seven straight.

UCO improved to 14-6 on the season in the league opener for both teams. The Ichabods, who were receiving votes in last week's Division II poll, fell to 19-7. The defending MIAA champion Bronchos return to Gerry Pinkston Stadium Sunday to host Emporia State in a 1 p.m. doubleheader.

"Those were two great wins," head coach Cody White said. "Washburn has a really good team. They can hit it and also have two tough pitchers, but we played well. That's the way you want to start the conference schedule and now we have to come back tomorrow ready to do it again against another good team."

The Ichabods scored their lone second-game run in the second inning and that slim lead held up until the faithful fifth.

Emily Deramus sparked the uprising with a one-out triple to right-center field and Ritz followed with a sacrifice fly to tie it. McKenna Johnson drew a two-out walk to keep the inning alive, then Odom drove the ball into left-center to plate Ritz with the go-ahead run.

Pipkin gave up a two-out single in the sixth before putting Washburn down in order to complete a stellar pitching outing. The junior right-hander scattered six hits while walking two and striking out two in improving to 6-3.

Odom had two of UCO's six hits to pace the offense.

The Bronchos banged out 10 hits in the opener, getting three from Lemos and two apiece from Deramus and Layne Smith.

Lemos got the Bronchos started in the bottom of the first with a lead-off single and Deramus followed with a bloop hit to center field. Johnson and Tatum Long then drew consecutive two-out walks to force in a run.

The Ichabods tied it in the second, but UCO surged in front to stay with three runs in the bottom of that frame.

Lane, Rylee Anglen and Lemos opened the inning with consecutive hits to load the bases with no outs and Deramus' bloop single to left plated Lane. An error allowed two more runs to score, giving the Bronchos a 4-1 advantage.

Washburn pushed across its final run in the top of the sixth to get within 4-2, but UCO answered right back and again Lemos was the catalyst.

The speedy sophomore belted a high fly ball to the warning track in center field for a lead-off triple before racing home on Deramus' sacrifice fly to short left field. Ritz followed with her sixth home run of the season, cranking a high fly ball against a strong north wind that barely cleared the fence in center.

That made it 6-2 and Ritz closed out a complete-game pitching victory in the top of the seventh. The junior right-hander allowed eight hits while walking one and striking out four in moving to 7-2 on the year.
