Beard, Bradley Spark UCO Sweep

EDMOND (March 10) – A pair of seldom-used pitchers came through with big-time relief performances to propel Central Oklahoma to a doubleheader sweep of  Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association rival Emporia State Sunday afternoon at Gerry Pinkston Stadium.

Shelby Beard and Kaylee Bradley both entered tight games under dire circumstances and responded in helping the No. 12-ranked Bronchos stretch their winning streak to nine in now.

UCO was nursing a 2-0 lead in the opener when Beard came on in the fifth inning to get the Bronchos out of a one-out, bases-loaded jam. The freshman allowed two hits in the final 2.2 frames to earn her first career save in a 6-0 victory.

Bradley faced the same one-out, bases-loaded dilemma in the second game when she entered the circle in the second inning of a 1-1 game. The junior transfer escaped trouble with no damage and gave up three hits with two strikeouts in the last 3.2 innings to earn her first win as UCO erupted for a 10-1 run-rule rout.

The Hornets entered the day averaging 7.1 runs a game – and were limited to one run by the Bronchos. UCO improved to 16-6 on the season and 4-0 in league play while dropping ESU to 16-9 and 1-3.

"I was really proud of the way Shelby and Kaylee pitched today," head coach Cody White said. "Neither one has pitched a lot for us so far this season and they both came on in tough situations. But they didn't blink and got the job done.

"That was big time and is really good for us moving forward. It was a good day. We swung the bats well and beat a pretty good team, but there's still a lot of work to do."

Emily Deramus was 3-for-4 at the plate to lead an 11-hit assault in the opener and clubbed one of UCO's three homers.

That came in the bottom of the first when the sophomore slugger launched a full-count pitch over the left-center wall for her fourth homer of the season to give the Bronchos a 1-0 lead.

Tatum Long followed Deramus' lead to start the second, driving her third homer of the year to the same spot to make it 2-0 and it stayed that way until the fifth.

Rylee Lemos roped a double down the right field line to ignite a two-out rally and scored when ESU threw the ball away on Deramus' infield single. Ritz got in on the homer parade next, planting the first pitch she saw over the center field wall for her seventh homer and a 5-0 UCO lead.

The Bronchos tallied their final round in the sixth. Sherri Mason had a one-out pinch-hit single and stole second before scoring on Layne Smith's base hit up the middle.

Ritz earned the pitching win, giving up seven hits and three walks with two strikeouts in the first 4.1 innings before Beard came on to pick up the save.

Second baseman Rylee Anglen showed off her range in making several fine plays to highlight UCO's error-free defensive effort.

Lemos and Deramus tied a single-game school record with two triples, while Deramus had a homer, single and four RBI to spark the second-game romp. Shayleigh Odom and Layne added two hits each.

The Bronchos went up 1-0 in the first when Lemos led off with a triple to right field and scored on Jacee Minter's sacrifice fly. ESU had four straight hits in tying it in the second before Bradley escaped the jam and it was all UCO after that.

Odom opened the bottom of the second with a walk and stole second before scoring on Layne's double down the left field line. Anglen walked, then Lemos ripped a two-run triple to center.

Deramus' RBI single through the left side and Minter's run-scoring fielder's choice pushed UCO's lead to 6-1.

The Bronchos made it 10-1 in the third.

Odom led off with her second homer of the season, this one a shot to right-center. Anglen reached on a fielder's choice and Lemos walked before Deramus blasted her fifth homer, this one a no-doubt bomb to left field.

UCO goes on the road next weekend, traveling to Pittsburg, Kan. for six games in the MIAA/NSIC Challenge.
