Bronchos Take Newman Series With Doubleheader Sweep

Central Oklahoma Wins 16-1, 2-1 In First Two Games Saturday, Wraps Up Series Sunday

WICHITA, Kan. – Carson Carpenter pelted three home runs to lead Central Oklahoma as the Bronchos earned a doubleheader sweep at Newman Saturday afternoon, taking the first game 16-1 in seven innings before holding off the host Jets for a 2-1 win the second contest.

UCO improved to 17-5 on the season with the wins, the Bronchos are now 4-4 in the MIAA, and Central clinched its first MIAA series win of the season.

"Those were two very different ball games but the good thing is we got a win in both of them," UCO head baseball coach John Martin said. "We were definitely more aggressive in the first game, but the pitching and defense was really good in both games and that's a good thing for us."

Central's offense was all over the Newman pitching staff in Game 1, scoring 16 runs on 13 hits. The Jets also walked 13 UCO batters.

Carson Carpenter's trifecta led the way for the Bronchos. The junior outfielder went 4-for-5 with three homers. He hit one in the first inning, third inning, and fourth inning. Carpenter finished the game with six RBIs and four runs scored. He is the 12th Broncho to hit three homers in one game and the first since Phillip Wilson did it in 2014.

Orlando Gonzalez also had a four-hit game, going 4-for-5 with four singles. The senior shortstop scored twice and had one RBI. Caden Robertson had two hits, Ty Hammack had a double, and Justin Santoyo and Ty Chapman added one hit each.

Carpenter's first home run gave UCO a 2-0 lead in what was a massive first inning for the Bronchos. Chapman had an RBI single to score Robertson and give UCO a 3-0 lead. Then Cameron Uselton scored on a Newman error to make it 4-0. Matt Baughn drew a bases-loaded walk to push it 5-0, then Hammack had a two-RBI double to make it 7-0. Carpenter grounded out to first in his second at bat of the inning but Baughn scored on the play to give UCO an 8-0 lead, then Robertson had an RBI single to score Hammack and make it 9-0 in the top of the first inning.

Carpenter's second homer was a solo shot in the third that made it 10-0. He third homer was a two-run shot in the fourth that made it 12-0. Gonzalez scored on the second big fly.

Newman got its only run of the game in the fifth on an RBI single.

Shea Morrison's bases-loaded walk scored Baughn to push the lead to 13-1 in the sixth inning. Chapman drew another walk after that where Hammack scored and it was 14-1, then Santoyo and Gonzalez both hit RBI singles to make it 16-1.

The Bronchos used five pitchers in two games Saturday, giving much of the staff a rest. Caleb Burchfield threw six innings in the Game 1 start, improving to 3-1 on the season. The senior right-hander allowed one run on six hits and two walks, but he also struck out six batters. Eric Rohrer came on the seventh and did walk one batter, but struck out three to seal the win.

Brady Gilmore got the Game 2 start and was solid in 6 2/3 innings of work. He gave up one run on four hits and struck out three batters. Austin Burda came out of the bullpen and threw 1 1/3, striking out one batter as he retired four in a row. Valek Cisneros threw the ninth. After a groundout to start the inning, he gave up one hit, and then struck out the next two to end the game and earn his seventh save of the season.

Game 2 was scoreless until the top of the fourth inning when Gonzalez got a hold of a pitch and sent it out to right field to give UCO a 2-0 lead. Uselton scored on the play as well. Newman got its only run of the second game with a solo home run off Gilmore in the bottom of the seventh inning.

Central Oklahoma and Newman will play Game 3 Sunday at 1 p.m. The Bronchos return home and will host Northeastern State in a midweek MIAA contest Tuesday evening at Wendell Simmons Field.
