Central Sweeps Newman With 5-3 Win Sunday

Bronchos Are 18-5 And Now Have A Three-Game Win Streak

WICHITA, Kan. – Central Oklahoma completed a three-game sweep of Newman Sunday with a 5-3 win in Game 3 of the MIAA series.

The Bronchos improved to 18-5 on the season with the win and are now 5-4 in league play.

"We still have to get better in our approach at the plate," UCO head coach John Martin said. "I don't think we are where we want to be on offense. Our pitching was good again today and all weekend. Credit to our coaches and staff and our catchers. We were good enough on defense to get the win and not just win the series, but get a sweep."

Central Oklahoma dropped each of its first two MIAA series 2-1 before sweeping Newman to get to 5-4 on the season in league play. The Bronchos host Northeastern State Tuesday in Edmond for another league contest.

Sunday in Wichita, Central Oklahoma got a 2-1 lead early, but had to come back from down 3-2 in the end. Matt Baughn's leadoff double in the seventh spark the later rally. A pair of RBI groundouts followed to score the senior catcher and tie the game, 3-3. Caden Robertson hit a solo home run after that to give the Bronchos a 4-3 lead.

UCO used five pitchers on Sunday. Brett Pense got the start for the Bronchos and was solid in five innings, giving up just two runs on five hits. He struck out three batters. Justin Smith followed and gave up one run on one hit. Preston Giltner came out in relief after just a third of an inning for Smith.

Giltner picked up the win after throwing 1 2/3 innings. He only allowed one hit during his outing. Austin Burda followed Giltner and got two outs, one strikeout, without allowing a hit. Valek Cisneros came on to pick up his eighth save of the season, throwing 1 1/3 innings and recording three strikeouts.

Newman also had a 1-0 lead in the game after an RBI single in the bottom of the second inning. But UCO took its 2-1 lead shortly after.

Cameron Uselton's single to center scored Ty Hammack, and Garrett Long followed with a sacrifice fly to center that scored Carson Carpenter.

Newman tied the game in the fifth, and took the 3-2 lead in the sixth. Baughn and Robertson's seventh inning performances gave the Bronchos the lead.

Hammack slapped an RBI single in the eighth to score Justin Santoyo and give UCO the 5-3 lead.

Hammack, Carpetner, and Baugh each had two-hit games. Robertson, Uselton, Santoyo, and Orlando Gonzalez all had one hit in the game.

Central Oklahoma takes on Northeastern State Tuesday in a midweek conference battle. The Bronchos are also home again next weekend for a three-game MIAA series with Fort Hays State.
