UCO Splits Midweek Doubleheader At OBU

Bronchos Take 5-2 Game 1 Victory Before 6-1 Game 2 Setback

SHAWNEE, Okla. – No. 17 Central Oklahoma split a non-conference doubleheader at Oklahoma Baptist Tuesday, taking Game 1 5-3 before a 6-1 setback in Game 2.

Central Oklahoma is 15-5 on the season following the split. The Bronchos are back to MIAA play this weekend and will play three games at Newman beginning Friday afternoon.

Tuesday, in Game 1, a 10-hit barrage helped Central Oklahoma take the first one. Ty Hammack went 3-for-4 with a triple, Caden Robertson went 2-for-4 with a double, and Wyatt Gray went 2-for-3. Cameron Uselton, Carson Carpenter, and Orlando Gonzalez all had one hit in the game.

UCO struck first, with Hammack scoring on a throwing error in the top of the first. He led off with a single, moved to second on an Uselton walk, then third on a fielder's choice by Robertson. Robertson then stole second and a throwing error allowed Hammack to score and give UCO a 1-0 lead.

Carpenter scored Robertson on a sacrifice fly on the next play and made it 2-0.

OBU got one back in the bottom of the second inning, but UCO had a response in the third. Robertson, Carpenter, and Gray all led off with singles. After a strikeout by Ty Chapman, Justin Santoyo grounded out to second base but scored Robertson to give UCO the 3-1 lead.

OBU kept the back and forth going with another in the third to cut the lead back to one, 3-2. The game remained that way until the seventh, when it was the Bronchos putting more runs on the board.

Hammack and Uselton had back-to-back one-out singles, then after Hammack was thrown out on the bases, an RBI double by Robertson scored Uselton and made it 4-2. Carpenter reached on a fielding error on the next play and Robertson scored to make it 5-2.

Valek Cisneros came on in the bottom of the seventh, recorded two strikeouts, and picked up his sixth save of the season to get UCO the win.

Brady Gilmore got the start for the Bronchos and threw 2.0 innings, allowing one run on two hits and a walk. Gilmore struck out three batters in the game.

Brian Skillman faced one batter in the third and gave up one run before Racer Felter finished off the inning. Jeremy Slate threw 1/3 of an inning in the fourth before Eric Rohrer came on in relief. He threw 1 2/3 and picked up the win after allowing just one hit. Justin Smith got two strikeouts in a 1-2-3 sixth inning before Cisneros finished it off.

In Game 2 Tuesday, Central's offense was not as efficient. Robertson had a triple, but UCO managed just six hits from six different players and five of the base hits were singles. Haden O'Toole led off the fifth with a single to right before Robertson pelted a two-out triple to right center to make it 2-1, OBU.

Chase Yarger got the start in the second game and threw 4.0 innings. The redshirt freshman gave up two runs on five hits and three walks. He struck out four in the start.

Brandon Gomez threw 2/3 of an inning, giving up three runs on three hits. Preston Giltner faced two batters in the fifth and walked both of them on eight pitches. Diego Dominguez got UCO out of the fifth, but he gave up one more run on one hit and a walk in 1/3 of an inning.

Carter Erickson threw 2/3 of an inning in the bottom of the sixth and Petyon Medeiros finished off the game with the final out. Both struck out one batter in the inning.

Uselton, Robertson, Carpenter, Chapman, Gonzalez, and O'Toole managed the six hits for the Bronchos.

Central Oklahoma returns to conference play this weekend. The Bronchos, 15-5 on the year, are just 2-4 in the MIAA. UCO went to No. 3 Central Missouri and went 1-2 before hosting Missouri Western and going 1-2 again. Newman is 4-17 on the year and 0-6 in the MIAA.
