Bronchos Sweep Newman Behind Ritz Blitz

No. 9 Central Oklahoma Runs Win Streak 21 Games With MIAA Doubleheader Sweep

EDMOND – Terin Ritz had quite a Saturday afternoon at Gerry Pinkston Stadium.

Central Oklahoma's star pitcher/first baseman threw a four-hit shutout while going 2-for-3 at the plate with a run batted in during a 5-0 first-game victory over Newman before collecting four RBIs on two mammoth home runs in an 8-0 second-game rout.

Ritz's dominating day enabled the No. 9-ranked Bronchos to run their winning streak to 21 straight, the second-longest in school history behind a 35-gamer in 2012. UCO moved to 28-6 overall and 10-0 in Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association play.

"Terin had quite a day," head coach Cody White said. "She pitched really well in the first game and just continues to swing the bat like she has all season. Jordyn (Pipkin) also pitched great for us.

"We're playing good right now, but we have to stay humble and keep working. There's still a long ways to go and we can't afford to get complacent."

Pipkin tossed a four-hitter in the nightcap that ended after five innings. She didn't walk a batter and struck out seven in an efficient 58-pitch inning, improving to 10-3 on the season.

The junior right-hander got out of a big-time jam in the top of the third of a scoreless game. The Jets had runners on second and third with no outs after back-to-back hits and a stolen base, but Pipkin escaped trouble with a strikeout, a groundout to the circle and another strikeout.

UCO scored all its runs in the fourth inning, erupting for eight runs on six hits and three Newman errors.

Ritz opened the inning with a massive blast to right field for the only run Pipkin would need, but the Bronchos piled it on after that. Jacee Minter reached on an error and McKenna Johnson singled before Minter scored on another error.

Rylee Anglen provided an RBI single up the middle, Rylee Lemos added a two-run single – extending her hitting streak to 19 straight -- and Ritz ended the scoring with her second homer of the inning.

This one was a moon shot over the center field wall, a three-run blast that made it 8-0. It was Ritz's 14th homer, moving her into eighth place on UCO's single-season list.

Pipkin quickly put the Jets down in order in the top of the fifth to complete the run-rule victory. UCO finished with eight hits, getting two apiece from Lemos and Ritz.

Ritz scattered four hits in tossing a second straight shutout and fourth consecutive complete game in the opener. She didn't allow a runner past base first until the seventh inning.

The junior right-hander tied a season-high with six strikeouts, didn't walk a batter and threw 96 pitches in moving to 14-2 with her 13th straight win.

Ritz and Lemos had two hits apiece to lead a seven-hit attack that was punctuated by Tatum Long's two-run home run.

The Bronchos broke on top in the third with a single run. Layne Smith was hit by pitch to lead off, went to second on Anglen's sacrifice bunt and took third on Lemos' single before scooting home when Sherri Mason laid down a perfect squeeze bunt.

That grew to a 3-0 cushion in the fourth when Shayleigh Odom reached on a fielder's choice and Long followed with a no-doubt two-out, two-run bomb high over the left field wall. It was Long's fourth homer of the season.

UCO completed the scoring with two more runs in the fifth, getting an RBI single from Ritz and sacrifice fly from Minter.

The Bronchos end an eight-game homestand Tuesday, hosting Southeastern Oklahoma for a 3 p.m. doubleheader in the final non-conference games of the regular season.
