UCO Sweeps Emporia

Bronchos Take All Three In MIAA Series In Edmond

EDMOND – Central Oklahoma pulled away late in a 9-6 win over Emporia State Saturday afternoon at Wendell Simmons Field to complete the three-game sweep of the Hornets in the MIAA series.

UCO improved to 27-7 on the season overall and 14-6 in the MIAA. The Bronchos have swept three conference opponents this season.

"Our offense played really good all weekend and we've needed that," UCO head baseball coach John Martin said. "Our pitching has been really solid, and although it wasn't the best this weekend, they did enough. And our offense gave them support. It was a good weekend for the guys."

Central Oklahoma has won four in a row after taking an MIAA midweek over Northeastern State and sweeping Emporia. The Bronchos host Southern Nazarene Tuesday for a non-conference midweek before traveling to eighth-ranked Missouri Southern next weekend.

Saturday, UCO broke a 6-6 tie in the bottom of the sixth inning, then added runs in the seventh and eighth to pull away with the win.

Brett Pense got the start for UCO and only threw 3.0 innings, allowing four runs on five hits and two walks. He struck out two batters. Austin Burda came on in relief and shut down ESU threw two innings of work. But in the top of the sixth, the Hornets hit two solo home runs to tie the game, 6-6, and chase Burda.

Preston Giltner followed him out of the bullpen and got the final out of the sixth, and through the seventh without allowing a hit. He earned the win and is now 3-0 on the season.

Racer Felter pitched the eighth and struck out two batters and got another groundout for a 1-2-3 inning. Valek Cisneros pitched the ninth, picked up his 10th save of the season, and also struck out two batters.

The Bronchos got 11 hits in the game on Saturday, with Caden Robertson, Orlando Gonzalez, and Matt Baughn each collecting two to lead the way. Aidan Proctor, Kaleb Glass, Shea Morrison, Haden O'Toole, and Garrett Long all had one hit each.

Emporia State took a 2-0 lead in the first inning Saturday, but Carson Carpenter's sacrifice fly got one back for the Bronchos in the bottom half. Proctor scored from third after a leadoff double.

After ESU went up 4-1 in the third, Baughn got another one back for the Bronchos with one swing of the bat. He took a solo homer to right field to make it 4-2.

Morrison tied the game in the bottom of the fourth with a two-RBI single to right field. Carpenter and Robertson scored on the play. Then, Baughn gave UCO a 6-4 lead with his two-RBI double down the left field line. Morrison and Gonzalez scored to give UCO its first lead of the game.

Emporia got back even with the two solo shots in the sixth, but Long scored O'Toole in the bottom half to put the Bronchos back in front, 7-6.

Robertson's RBI single in the seventh scored Glass, and Long's sac-fly in the eighth scored O'Toole again and gave UCO its final, 9-6.
