Bronchos Flip Script On Emporia In Game 2

Central Oklahoma Erased A 6-0 Deficit And Won 11-7 To Clinch MIAA Series

EDMOND – Central Oklahoma didn't let a 6-0 deficit spoil their MIAA contest with Emporia State Friday in Game 2 of the three-game series at Wendell Simmons Field.

Central Oklahoma 11, Emporia State 7.

The Bronchos trailed 6-0 with two outs in the top of the first inning when starter Brady Gilmore was pulled. Matt Engler came out of the bullpen to relieve the righty and get the final out.

The Bronchos still trailed 6-0 heading to the bottom of the fourth inning before the offense finally got going.

UCO added three in the fourth, then one in the fifth and sixth innings, to make it 6-5. Then a five-run onslaught came in the bottom of the seventh as the Bronchos turned the game from a six-run deficit to a four-run advantage.

Both teams added solo homers in the eighth innings before the Bronchos ended up with the 11-7 victory.

UCO clinched its fourth MIAA series of the season with Friday's win. The Bronchos are now 26-7 on the season and 13-6 in the MIAA. Central Oklahoma and Emporia State (15-19, 6-13 MIAA) will play Game 3 Saturday at 1 p.m.

Gilmore lasted 2/3 of an inning and gave up six runs on three hits and two walks. Engler threw two solid innings, allowing two hits and two walks, but no runs.

Diego Dominguez came out of the bullpen with the bases loaded in the top of the third. He got the final out, then threw two more innings, allowing no hits or runs on two walks. He struck out two as well in 2 1/3 innings of work.

Racer Felter, who would get the win (2-0), threw two innings, allowing just one hit and one walk while striking out three batters. Chase Yarger threw the eighth and ninth innings, allowing only a solo homer while striking out two in the game.

UCO got three runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. Caden Robertson scored Carson Carpenter on an RBI groundout. Wyatt Gray scored Ryan Strickland on a double to center field. And Orlando Gonzalez scored Gray on a bunt single. That made it 6-3.

Robertson made it 6-4 in the fifth with an RBI triple to right center field. He scored Carpenter on the play.

Then Ty Chapman made it 6-5 with an RBI triple to right center in the sixth inning, scoring Gonzalez on the play.

Then the seventh happened.

Kaleb Glass led off with a single and moved to second on a single by Carpenter. Both moved to third on a wild pitch, and then Glass scored on a second wild pitch, tying the game, 6-6.

Carpenter moved to third on that play. He scored when Garrett Long hit a pinch-hit sac-fly to left, giving UCO a 7-6 lead.

Gray added an RBI single to score Robertson, who drew a walk earlier in the inning. Chapman's two-RBI single scored Gray and Gonzalez to make it 10-6.

Aidan Proctor added a solo homer in the bottom of the eighth to give UCO its final run of the game.

Carpenter, Gray, and Gonzalez led the Bronchos with three hits each. Robertson and Chapman added two each. Proctor, Glass, and Strickland each had one hit. The Bronchos scattered 16 hits in the game, with Gray and Gonzalez belting doubles, and Carpenter, Robertson, and Chapman all hitting triples to go with Proctor's home run. UCO had six extra-base hits.

Game 3 is scheduled for Saturday at 1 p.m. The Bronchos will host Southern Nazarene in a non-conference midweek game Tuesday, April 2, then UCO hits the road for a three-game series at Missouri Southern next weekend.
