Kaleb Glass, UCO, Walkoff Emporia In Game 1 Win

Central Oklahoma Rallies In Bottom Of 11th Inning To Win MIAA Series Opener

EDMOND – Kaleb Glass took a 3-2 pitch for a single through the left side of the infield to score Haden O'Toole and give Central Oklahoma a walkoff 7-6 victory in 11 innings against Emporia State Thursday night in the first of three MIAA games this weekend at Wendell Simmons Field.

Glass' late-game heroics helped Central Oklahoma improve to 25-7 on the season and 12-6 in the MIAA. Emporia is 15-17 overall and 6-12 in league play. Game 2 is scheduled for Friday at 3 p.m. with Game 3 wrapping up the series Saturday at 1 p.m.

"I'm happy for Kaleb," UCO head baseball coach John Martin said. "That's the kid you hope gets those chances and he deserves to come through for us. He's been such a great leader for three years and we're just really happy for him.

"We didn't play very well today," Martin continued. "But we battled and did enough to get the win and that's what matters. Now we have to forget about this and get ready for Game 2 tomorrow."

O'Toole drew a walk to leadoff the bottom of the 11th before Emporia made a pitching change. Wyatt Gray tried to sacrifice bunt after that, but he popped up to the pitcher on the play. Garrett Long then delivered. After an 0-2 start with a pair of strikeouts, the junior infielder delivered a double to left center, moving O'Toole to third.

Emporia then chose to intentionally walk Aidan Proctor, loading the bases for Glass.

Glass drew a 3-0 count before Emporia threw one strike. Another one found the inside corner and the count went full. But the next pitch was the one Glass turned on. He hit a groundball to shortstop that got passed and O'Toole trotted home for the game-winning run.

Glass finished 3-for-6 with three singles, one run, one RBI, and two stolen bases.

Caden Robertson also had three hits in the game and was one triple short of the cycle. The junior outfielder hit an RBI double in the bottom of the first to score Glass. He hit a two-run home run in the third, scoring Carson Carpenter. Then he also had a single in the sixth.

Proctor finished the game 2-for-5, O'Toole went 2-for-4, and Carpenter, Shea Morrison, and Long all had one hit each.

Caleb Burchfield got the start for the Bronchos and was pulled in the top of the fourth. He finished with 3.0 innings pitched, four runs allowed on four hits and a walk, and one strikeout.

Brandon Gomez and Denton Whiteside kept ESU at back for the fourth and fifth innings. Eric Rohrer faced two batters in the sixth before Preston Giltner came on to pitch. Giltner got through 2 1/3, allowing no runs on two hits and three walks. He had four strikeouts in the game.

Valek Cisneros came on with one out in the eighth to get out of a jam. He did just that with a bases-loaded strikeout, and a lineout to third.

O'Toole smacked an RBI double with two outs in the bottom of the eighth inning to score Austin Oldham, who pinch-ran earlier in the inning. O'Toole was thrown out going for third on the play, but the run scored and gave UCO a 6-5 lead going to the ninth with Cisneros on the mound.

But then Emporia tied the game. A leadoff walk, a stolen base, and a wild pitch put a runner on third. With runners on the corners, Cisneros got ESU to hit into a double play, but the runner on third scored and forced extras.

Austin Burda also pitched the 11th, giving up a hit and two walks, before getting the Bronchos out of another jam to set up the final rally.
