UCO Takes NSU Series With Midweek Win In Tahlequah

Bronchos Beat Riverhawks 9-2 In Game 2 Win; Series Finale In Edmond In Two Weeks

TAHLEQUAH, Okla. – Central Oklahoma beat Northeastern State 9-2 Tuesday in an MIAA midweek matchup of longtime rivals.

The Bronchos improved to 24-7 on the season with the win and are now 11-6 in the MIAA. The Riverhawks are 15-16 overall and 6-11 in league play.

Central also won the season series against NSU after having already earned a win in Edmond two weeks ago. The two will play the third and final game of the series in Edmond in two weeks.

Tuesday in Tahlequah, Northeastern State took a 2-0 lead after scoring once in the bottom of the first and once more in the bottom of the second. The Bronchos got one back in the fourth, but it wasn't until the seventh inning that UCO took a commanding lead thanks to a seven-run frame. Central added one more in the ninth for good measure.

Shea Morrison went 2-for-4 with a double and a run scored to lead the Bronchos. Orlando Gonzalez also went 2-for-4 with two RBIs and two runs scored.

Morrison's double was the only extra base hit of the game for the Bronchos, who scattered nine hits in the game. Ty Hammack, Carson Carpenter, Wyatt Gray, Matt Baughn, and Ty Chapman all had one hit in the game.

Morrison scored UCO's first run of the game after his leadoff double in the top of the fourth inning. With two outs, Gray singled down the left field line and plated Morrison to make it 2-1.

In the seventh, Gray was hit by a pitch with one out before Proctor came on as a pinch-runner. Chapman and Hammack then hit back-to-back singles with Hammack scoring Proctor to tie the game, 2-2.

After Kaleb Glass drew a walk, Carpenter singled up the middle to score Chapman for the go-ahead run and a 3-2 lead for Central. NSU made a pitching change at that point, but the next arm walked Caden Robertson, which scored Hammack, and gave UCO a 4-2 lead.

Gonzalez got both of his RBIs after Morrison struck out. Gonzalez's single to left scored Glass and Carpenter. After Garrett Long drew a walk to load the bases again, Proctor was up, and he was hit by a pitch. Robertson scored on the play to make it 7-2. Then Chapman drew another walk that scored Gonzalez to make it 8-2.

Gonzalez drew a one-out walk in the ninth and Baughn scored him on a two-out single to left that made it the final, 9-2.

Chase Yarger got the start for the Bronchos but was chased in the second after giving up two runs on three hits and two walks. He did strike out two batters in his 1 1/3 innings of work.

Racer Felter picked up the win for effective relief. He threw 4 2/3 innings and didn't allow a hit. He did walk one batter, but also struck out four.

Austin Burda, Preston Giltner, and Valek Cisneros all threw one inning of relief work. Burda gave up two hits and had two strikeouts. Giltner K'd one batter. And Cisneros finished it off. The DII saves leader allowed a leadoff single before getting a strikeout, picking off the runner at first, and then recording a second strikeout to end the game.

Central Oklahoma has a busy week with four games in five days. Following Tuesday's trip to Tahlequah, the Bronchos will host Emporia State for a three-game MIAA series beginning Thursday in Edmond.

UCO will play at 6 p.m. Thursday, 3 p.m. Friday, and 1 p.m. Saturday before taking Easter Sunday off.
