Central Oklahoma Loses Finale In Pittsburg

Bronchos Drop Series 2-1 With Sunday Loss, Turns To Four Games In Five Days This Week

PITTSBURG, Kan. – Central Oklahoma got hit with two big rallies Sunday at Pittsburg State and lost the third game of the MIAA series, 18-4.

The Bronchos are now 23-7 on the season overall and 10-6 in the MIAA. Pittsburg State is 20-9 overall and 11-5 in league play.

Central Oklahoma comes out of the weekend series and will have a busy week with four games in five days before taking Easter Sunday off. UCO visits Northeastern State to play Game 2 of a month-long three-game midweek series. The Bronchos host Emporia State Thursday-Saturday for another three-game MIAA series.

Sunday in Pittsburg, the hosts came out with two in the bottom of the first, then after the Bronchos got one back in the third, PSU put up six in the fourth inning. A 10-run sixth soon followed as UCO would be run-ruled in the series finale.

Brett Pense got the start for the Bronchos and his day was done as part of the six-run fourth inning. Pense threw 3 2/3 and gave up seven runs on seven hits and a walk. Only two of his runs were earned and he struck out five batters, but the Bronchos were in a 6-1 hole after the first big rally of the day by Pitt State.

Preston Giltner came on in relief of Pense and he gave up four more runs on three hits and three walks in 1 2/3 innings on the mound. Eric Rohrer, two runs and two walks in 1/3 of an inning, and Jeremey Slate, five runs on four hits without recording an out, and finally Denton Whiteside, one pitch, one out, finished the game for the Bronchos.

Caden Robertson provided some offense for UCO Sunday. The junior outfielder went 2-for-4 with a double and a solo home run. He scored twice in the game. Kaleb Glass followed him in the lineup and went 1-for-4 with an RBI double, scoring Robertson in the seventh.

Shea Morrison also had a solo home run batting fifth in the lineup behind Robertson and Glass.

Orlando Gonzalez, Matt Baughn, and Ty Hammack all had hits in the game too.

Robertson's solo homer came in the top of the third inning to make it 2-1. Morrison's came in the sixth and made it 8-2. Baughn's RBI single scored Gonzalez after that and made it 8-3. Glass's RBI double in the seventh made it 18-4.

Central Oklahoma plays Northeastern State Tuesday for the second time this season. The Bronchos won the series opener in Edmond two weeks ago, 9-4. NSU welcomes UCO to Tahlequah Tuesday at 5 p.m. The Riverhawks are 15-15 on the season, 6-10 in the MIAA, and just won two of three against Emporia State (15-16, 6-10 MIAA), which plays at Pitt State on Tuesday before coming to Edmond.

This weekend's series will be played Thursday-Friday-Saturday before the Easter holiday. Game times are 6 p.m., 3 p.m., and 1 p.m. at Wendell Simmons Field.
