Bronchos Take Two From Northwest Missouri

Central Oklahoma Runs Win Streak To 19 With Another Doubleheader Sweep

EDMOND – Kya Watson made the most of a rare playing opportunity to spark a second-game win that gave No. 9-ranked Central Oklahoma a Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association sweep of Northwest Missouri Saturday afternoon at Gerry Pinkston Stadium.

Watson  a freshman playing in just her second game of the season crushed a three-run home run in Game 2 and Shelby Beard came through with a clutch pitching performance in a 11-6 victory. UCO posted a 4-0 shutout in the opener behind Terin Ritz's four-hit complete-game shutout.

UCO moved to 26-6 on the season and 8-0 in conference play with the sweep. The Bronchos have now won 19 in a row for their longest winning streak since winning 20 consecutive games in 2019.

"We didn't play our best, but had some big hits in key situations and came out with two good wins," head coach Cody White said. "Terin and Shelby both pitched really well and our defense was solid. It was a good weekend for us."

NWMSU grabbed a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning in the second game, but the Bronchos responded with a six-run eruption in their first at bat.

Rylee Lemos drove the first pitch she saw up the middle for a lead-off single, Sherri Mason walked and Ritz ripped a run-scoring single to center before Jacee Minter's groundout pushed in a run.

McKenna Johnson kept the inning going with a base hit and Shayleigh Odom reached on an error that scored another run to bring up Watson. The freshman catcher came through with a massive blast over the left-center field wall for her first career home run to make it 6-2.

The Bearcats scored two more in the second, with UCO getting one back in the bottom half to stay ahead 7-4. NWMSU got within 7-6 in the fourth before the Bronchos put it away with a four-run sixth-inning uprising.

Lemos opened the inning with an infield single and Ritz drew a one-out walk before Minter roped a two-run double to left-center. Johnson walked and Layne Smith made it 11-6 with a two-out, two-run single up the middle.

Lemos and Johnson had two hits apiece to lead a 10-hit attack, while Minter and Watson had three RBI each.

Beard took over in the circle to start the third and gave up two runs on three hits in the final five innings to earn the win. The freshman struck out two and improved to 3-0.

Ritz dominated the Bearcats in the opener, scattering four hits while walking one and striking out two in her 12th straight win. No. 99 threw 99 pitches in her eighth complete game outing of the season and improved to 13-2.

UCO managed just six hits and had none until the fourth inning – but still pushed across two runs in the bottom of the third.

Rylee Anglen, Lemos and Mason drew consecutive one-out walks before Anglen trotted home on Ritz's deep sacrifice fly to center field. Lemos then sprinted home on a double steal with Mason to make it 2-0.

It stayed that way until the sixth when the Bronchos scored twice more.

Johnson led off with a single to right-center, then speedy pinch-runner Brooklyn Ryan raced all the way to third on Odom's perfectly placed sacrifice bunt.

Tatum Long followed with an RBI bloop single to left and pinch-runner Makella Mobly went to second on a groundout before scoring on Anglen's single up the middle to make it 4-0.

Anglen highlighted an error-less defensive outing by the Bronchos with a pair of stellar plays from her second base spot. She snared a line drive and doubled a runner off first in the fourth inning, then tagged out a runner and got the batter at first to complete another double play in the sixth.

The Bronchos continue an eight-game homestand next Saturday with an MIAA doubleheader against Newman.
