UCO Comeback Falls Short At Pitt State

Bronchos Drop Series Opener With One Blemish In Pittsburg

PITTSBURG, Kan. – Central Oklahoma let one rally go too far and the Bronchos suffered a 6-5 loss as a result at Pittsburg State Friday evening in the first of three MIAA games against the Gorillas this weekend at Al Ortolani Field.

UCO, ranked 25th in the country in this week's NCBWA Top 25, fell to 22-6 on the season with the loss. The Bronchos are now 9-5 in the MIAA.

Game 2 is scheduled for Saturday at 2 p.m. with Game 3 on tap for Sunday at 1 p.m.

Pittsburg State (19-8, 10-4) scored all six runs in the bottom of the fourth inning and did so on just two hits. UCO got one in each of the fifth, sixth, and seventh innings, then made it interesting with two more in the ninth before a late comeback rally fell short.

Caleb Burchfield (4-2) took the loss on Friday. The senior right-hander gave up the six runs got through the first three innings without allowing a hit. Then in the fourth, back-to-back one-out singles put two on. A wild pitch moved them both to scoring position. Then four straight walks followed.

Dax Sharp came out of the bullpen to relieve Burchfield. He hit the first batter he faced, then got a strikeout, but walked the next two. Racer Felter was the second pitcher out of bullpen and got the next batter to fly out foul to end the inning.

The six runs on two hits ultimately was too much.

Burchfield finished 3 1/3 with six runs on two hits and five walks. He struck out two batters in the game. Sharp went 1/3 with one strikeout. Felter ended up throwing 3 1/3 and only allowed two hits while earning one strikeout. Peyton Medeiros finished the game, getting throough the eighth with one hit, one walk, and one strikeout.

Kaleb Glass and Shea Morrison each had two hits to lead UCO's offense. Ty Hammack, Carson Carpenter, Orlando Gonzalez and Matt Baughn also had one hit each.

Haden O'Toole went 0-for-1 in the game, but had two sacrifice flies. His first scored Morrison in the fifth to make it 6-1.

Carpenter hit a solo homer – his team-leading ninth of the season – to make it 6-2 in the sixth. Then Morrison hit his third of the year – and the last two weeks – to make it 6-3 in the seventh.

Gonzalez led off the top of the ninth with a single to right field and Morrison followed him with a double to left center. Aiden Proctor pinch-hit and scored Gonzalez with an RBI groundout, then O'Toole scored  Morrison with his second sac-fly to make it 6-5 with two outs in the ninth.

Hammack followed with a double, but after a pitching change, Carpenter struck out to end the game.

UCO and PSU were tied for third in the league standings to start the series. The Bronchos will look to level the series and pull back even with Pitt Saturday afternoon.
