Bronchos Sweep Fort Hays State In Edmond

Central Oklahoma Wins 9-1, Running Win Streak To Seven Games

EDMOND – Central Oklahoma used a first-inning rally to gain an advantage it wouldn't let go of Sunday in a 9-1 win over Fort Hays State in MIAA play at Wendell Simmons Field.

The Bronchos improved to 22-5 on the season following the three-game sweep of the Tigers. UCO is now 9-4 in the MIAA. Fort Hays State is 18-9 following the weekend and 6-7 in league play.

"It was good to see the guys compete and battle for all three games this weekend," UCO head baseball coach John Martin said. "We didn't let up when we got a lead, and we didn't let up after winning the first two. As coaches, we're happy with the guys pushing through for the sweep."

UCO has swept back-to-back league opponents after taking all three from Newman in Wichita last weekend.

Sunday, left-hander Dax Sharp got the start and was solid in his outing. He threw 6.0 innings, allowing just one run on two hits and a walk. He struck out four on the day.

Sharp gave up a single in the second after hitting the leadoff. He also issued his only walk in that inning before getting out of a bases loaded jam.

He gave up his second hit of the game, a solo home run, in the top of the third inning.

Chase Yarger, a redshirt freshman right-hander from Moore, came on in relief and threw the final three innings to earn a save. He didn't allow a hit to any of the nine batters he faced. He walked one but got a double play on the next batter. For Yarger, he went nine up, nine down to finish the game.

Central Oklahoma had 12 hits in the game on Sunday, with five players recording two each. Ty Hammack, Carson Carpenter, Caden Robertson, Justin Santoyo, and Shea Morrison each had two hits. Kaleb Glass and Garrett Long added one each.

Carpenter and Robertson had the only extra-base hits of the game for the Bronchos with both hitting doubles.

Central Oklahoma scored four runs in the bottom of the first inning for the second time in as many games. UCO ended this week with a 12-0 advantage in the first inning of four games played (3-0, 1-0, 4-0, 4-0).

Hammack led of the game with a single before Carpenter followed with a single. Robertson scored Hammack with a ground-rule double. Orlando Gonzalez then laid down a sac-bunt to score Carpenter, and Morrison's two-out single scored Santoyo to give UCO the 4-0 lead.

Santoyo made it 5-0 with an RBI single in the second inning, scoring Glass on the play.

After Hays' homer, UCO came back strong in the fourth.

With Robertson on third and Glass on second, Santoyo hit a ground ball back to the pitcher, who went to third to get Carpenter. Carpenter scored from third on the throw, Glass safely managed his way to third, and Santoyo got to second on the fielder's choice.

Gonzalez then hit an RBI groundout to score Glass, and Morrison hit a sac-fly to score Santoyo and give UCO an 8-1 lead.

In the bottom of the seventh, UCO had a chance to end the game early via run rule. With two outs, Carpenter hit a double to right to score Long and make it 9-1. Then, the Bronchos got the bases loaded thanks to Robertson and Glass being hit by pitch on consecutive pitches. Santoyo was up and with a full count, he was also hit by a pitch, but the umpire said his bat came around on the play and called him out on strikes.

Central Oklahoma went 1-2-3 in the eighth before Yarger ended the game in the top of the ninth.

UCO wraps up a four-game homestand 4-0 as the Bronchos extended their win streak to seven games. Central Oklahoma plays at Pittsburg State next weekend.
