Bronchos Batter St. Cloud State In Sweep

PITTSBURG, Kan. (March 16) – No. 11-ranked Central Oklahoma overwhelmed St. Cloud State with a 27-hit assault in sweeping a doubleheader Saturday afternoon on the second day of the MIAA/NSIC Challenge.

The Bronchos banged out 14 hits in a 9-0 run-rule rout in the opener before collecting 13 hits in a 9-6 second-game victory. UCO improved to 20-6 in running its winning streak to 13 in a row and finished the three-day event Sunday with a 9:30 a.m. twinbill against Winona State.

"We really swung the bats well today," head coach Cody White said. "It's always good to get your offense going early and we were able to do that in both games. It's been a good weekend so far and hopefully we can finish it off right tomorrow."

Terin Ritz and Jacee Minter had three hits apiece to pace UCO's first-game attack. Rylee Lemos, Shayleigh Odom and Layne Smith added two hits each.

The Bronchos broke on top 2-0 in the top of the second inning on Lemos' two-out, two-run triple to right-center field. Ritz led off the third with a big drive to right field for her eighth home run of the season.

UCO really broke it open in the fifth, pushing across six runs.

Ritz opened the inning with a single and Minter followed with her ninth homer, this one a drive to right field. Smith added a two-run shot, while Emily Deramus had an RBI double and Tatum Long a sacrifice fly.

Terin Ritz picked up the pitching win, allowing four hits in the first four innings to improve to 10-3. Shelby Beard gave up one hit in throwing the fifth inning to close it out.

Deramus went 3-for-4 at the plate to lead the Bronchos in the second game, while Lemos and Odom each had two hits.

Ritz's RBI single in the bottom of the first put UCO on top and Makella Mobly had a run-scoring base hit in the second to make it 2-0.

The Bronchos pushed their advantage to 6-0 in the third behind a two-run triple by Minter and RBI hits by Odom and Kya Watson before adding three more in the fourth.

Deramus had the big hit in that frame with a two-run triple and Ritz added an RBI groundout as UCO went up 9-0.

St. Cloud scored all six of its runs in the top of the fifth, but it wasn't nearly enough.

Jordyn Pipkin gave up just one hit in the first four innings to earn the pitching win, improving to 8-3. Kaylee Bradley and Beard finished up the game.
