UCO Takes Fort Hays Series With Game 2 Win Saturday

Bronchos Secure MIAA Series Win With 8-4 Victory

EDMOND – Central Oklahoma used a first-inning rally, solid pitching, and a second late rally to earn an 8-4 win over Fort Hays State Friday in Game 2 of the three-game MIAA series at Wendell Simmons Field.

The Bronchos, now 21-5 on the year and 8-4 in the MIAA, took the season series with Hays after an 8-2 win Friday and the 8-4 win Saturday. Fort Hays State is 18-8 on the year and 6-6 in league play. Game 3 is scheduled for Sunday at 1 p.m.

Central Oklahoma scored four runs on four hits and an error in the bottom of the first inning Saturday. The Bronchos sat on that lead for most of the game. Fort Hays got two with two outs in the fifth, and another in the sixth, to make a game of it. But the Bronchos responded with three in the seventh and another in the eighth to pull away.

Both teams scattered 10 hits in the game. Carson Carpenter and Caden Robertson had two each to lead the Bronchos. Kaleb Glass, Justin Santoyo, Orlando Gonzalez, Ty Chapman, Aiden Proctor, and Matt Baughn all had one hit in the game.

UCO used five pitchers Saturday. Starter Brady Gilmore went 4 2/3 before the two-out rally by Hays chased UCO's right-handed arm. Gilmore struck out a season-high eight batters, getting one flyout and four groundouts too. He walked just one batter and gave up two runs on six hits.

Eric Rohrer came out of the bullpen to get out of the fifth, then Preston Giltner came out to get UCO out of the seventh as Fort Hays kept fighting back. Rohrer struck out one batter, got a flyout and a groundout, and gave up one run on one hit. Giltner picked up the win, throwing 1 1/3 innings out of the bullpen. He also struck out one batter and gave up one hit, but kept Hays from tying the game.

After UCO made it 7-3, Austin Burda came out for the eighth inning. He walked a batter and gave up a hit while recording one out. Valek Cisneros was then called out early to finish the game. The UCO closer, who leads the country with eight saves on the year, finished off the final 1 2/3 innings, striking out three batters along the way. He did give up one solo homer in the top of the ninth.

In the first inning Saturday, Ty Hammack swung on the first pitch he saw and hit a groundball to shortstop. The routine play was not fielded cleanly by the FHSU first baseman and Hammack reached on the error. That seemed to ignite the early rally.

Three straight singles followed, getting Hammack across on Robertson's first hit of the game. A Justin Santoyo sac-fly added the second run by Carpenter, an RBI groundout by Shea Morrison scored Robertson to make it 3-0, then Kaleb Glass scored on a wild pitch to give UCO a 4-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning.

In the seventh, Proctor pinch-hit and singled, then stole second. He moved to third on a sac-bunt by O'Toole, then scored on a Hammack groundout to give UCO the 5-3 lead. Carpenter followed Hammack with an RBI triple, then Robertson got another RBI with a groundout to score Carpenter and give UCO the 7-3 lead.

Santoyo led off the eighth with a double and scored when Ty Chapman singled to right center to give UCO the 8-3 lead.

Central Oklahoma has won six in a row, including a three-game MIAA sweep of Newman last weekend. The Bronchos dropped their first two league series 2-1 each to Central Missouri and Missouri Western, but are looking for back-to-back sweeps of Newman and Fort Hays State.
